Wage war on hoons Use car-crushing powers, trauma surgeon tells police

UNUSED powers to crush the cars of serial hoons must be enforced, to send a message to reckless drivers and end carnage on the state’s roads, a leading surgeon says.

Modbury Hospital director of orthopaedics Robert Atkinson yesterday told The Advertiser surgeons were distraught at the rate of avoidable injury and death caused by hoon drivers.

The State Government introduced laws in February to allow police to crush the vehicles of hoons who commit two or more serious driving offences in a year.

SA Police are yet to enforce the powers, despite having said in August they were considering destroying one vehicle under the new laws.

Dr Atkinson is a former chairman of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons’ road trauma committee. During debate at a national medical conference in Adelaide tomorrow, he will increase pressure on officials to use crushing powers.

‘‘We have 5000 hoon drivers who have had their cars impounded or clamped (in the past year) and then we hit them with a wet feather and nothing changes,’’ he said yesterday. ‘‘We need to get into people’s faces and, of the 5000, randomly crush some. It’ll be on Facebook and TV and YouTube. It would get headlines around the world.

If car's are going to be crushed then it should be based on the offences not "randomly crush some".

Because if they are going to "randomly crush cars" I imagine that the driver with the BMW X5 that's caught speeding time adn time again will get to keep their car while the 24yo male Holden driver will end up with a cube after chirping 2nd from the lights.

Lets shock the world.

Lets raise speed limits by at least 10% in ALL areas. Lets make pedestrians at fault for being hit by a car on a roadway where they do not cross at a crossing. Lets make penalties for exceeding the new speed limits non monetary and all points (eg 15 km/hr over 6 point loss and 20 community service hours). Most importantly, lets teach people to drive, teach people to respect the road rules and then many of the issues will be solved. If people are caught without a licence, well, GPS implant, the second they get into a vehicle to drive, they are electrocuted from within.

In all seriousness though, how many people are killed drifiting etc(as much as it pisses me off) as opposed to lack of concentration?

Concentration loss IS the biggest killer by far, Speed, burnouts etc are just contributing factors.

Much rather a woman on a phone in a small car over someone in a 60 tonne b-double on the phone down the monash freeway. The amount of drivers in heavy vehicles that are being reported to companies I work for are horrendous. It is no wonder trucks are killing so many on victorian roads of late. Food in one hand, phone in the other.

Fact is, it is not just one group that needs to be targeted, it is ALL GROUPS. Mobile phones should be banned from being visible in a car, if you wish to use your phone in the car it should be compulsory that 1. Phone is out of sight and 2, Can only be operated through stereo via bluetooth, voice activation etc.
