VicRoads U-turn on 'shocking' Remembrance Day policy
It's staggering to think someone in this country would even consider this let alone act on it.VicRoads has been forced to make an embarrassing apology today after it was revealed the organisation did not mark Remembrance Day for fear of offending people.
An apology after the fact is too late IMO.
id question as how it could offend someone.
it is a significant part of australian history, something people should know of and respect.
was reading the paper the other day and it had the story of a little girl and an elderly veteran who was selling the poppies, she asked what it was for. either they dont teach it anymore, or she missed the day (hopefully the later).
if you dont like or are offended by this day, which is significant i would like ask, how?
apology afterwards is slack, should have had the silence and so on, screw the impatient person who has to drop the kid off for daycare or get to maccas for their hamburger, instead learn to respect austrlia or get out.
I'll probably get flamed for this, but why do we have to be told when to remember our fallen soldiers? I don't think it shouldn't happen out of fear of offending certain cultures, but I don't think it should HAVE to happen at that particular time.
I am very grateful for those that have given their lives so we can live in a free country, but I don't believe I should be told to have a minutes silence on a certain day. Everyone is entitled to remember in their own way/time.
i think its more the fact that we give them a day mate...
they died for us, its not that hard to give them a day yeah??
sure we can think bout them whenever..but by giving them an actual day
just so we dont forget them, and pay the due respects is great in my opinion
...alot of people wouldnt do squat for this country these days
ps...
sorry soop just read the article....wtf is all i can say...
are we even living in australia anymore? because the whole
point of the day is to remember our fallen soldiers...
those Aussies that gave it all for us, and this could cause an
offence to someone?
well if this offends you send me your address and ill come over
and give you a well needed beating...that is all

I am a firm believer in FIFO, if you dont like it go elsewhere. Its absolute rubbish that they didnt mark the day. Its a significant day for a lot of people.
exactly...it nearly brings a tear to my eye...to think that people will die for this country...
we make a day for them, in their honor....
and this day could be offensive to immigrants...
this country craps all over theirs...and we are providing them
with a haven to do all their foreign stuff...
then it comes to something like remembrance day and people are gonna get offended?
ridiculous...
we as a country are giving in too much. For example some schools have stopped putting up christmas decorations and doing christmassy things so it doesnt offend some students. I reckon leave it as it was and if a few races dont like it then leave australia. Simple as that.
Every year at my work we have been downing tools at 11.00am on remembrance day to respect our fallen diggers.
It is the least we can do to the sacrifice they made for us.
If other cultures are offended I will be more than happy to show them the door myself.
I agree with the Christmas decorations and silence to remember who gave the ultimate for us to walk freely. If some races don't like it, leave or deal with it.
We don't go to Russia and say stop drinking vodka because it tastes like s*** do we? :P
Why should they tell us or press a choice on us about changing our culture?
I was born in Ireland and both my parents are Irish and I still respect the brave soldiers that fought for this country.
I don't mean to sound racist or along those lines but, deal with our culture like we deal with yours or gtfo.
No one in their right mind should be offended by this anyway, and if you are, please keep your silly ideals to yourself.

Saddens me to think things have come to this
Im in total agreeance to what has been said, if everyone standing silent for 1 friggin minute to remember the people that gave the ultimate sacrafice for this country, offends anyone, those people should be shipped out of this country instantly. Go live in a 3rd world country and then see if 1minutes silence is really so offensive to you.
It marks the end of the Great War.
It would be a complete understatement to say how disgusted I am with the politics surrounding this.
Our workshop stopped work in rememberance, anyone ignoring this would have been kicked the hell out.
I'm with everyone when they say, "if you don't like it, leave." there is no one stopping you from pissing off.
Its not only a commemoration of the end of WW1 these days, its a day of remembrance for all fallen soldiers.
Seriously who would be offended by it?
not me....................

there are three types of people in the world , those who can count and those who can't
It's not really taught in schools, You hear about Ned kelly and Glenrowan and Federation day, then you're done.
Its a real good way to repeat the mistakes of the past IMO.
Good post Soop, totally agree, its disgusting.
What you have to remember is, 99% of immigrants/foreigners would agree completely as well... they accept how things in a new country and don't kick up a stink. It's that 1% of malcontents who pretend to be "offended" at every turn, and give their fellows a bad name. Worse still are the limp-wristed bureaucrats, who fall over themselves in mollycoddling this minority and ensure the rights of the majority are stomped on, all in the name of "tolerance".
It s**ts me no end :|
ps. as for Christmas.... man 6 weeks of glittery crap and annoying repetitive carols in every shopping centre I go, fair dinkum, I can do without it.
Ted: I don't like Ronald MacDonald. He skips.
Greta: Oh Dad, he's a clown.
Ted: He's a poof.
Oh yeah, Christmas shits me up the wall too, but its the fact that they stop children celebrating it at school is just a joke.
My cousin in the UK posted this on FB this morning:
Today we saw Muslims break the 2 minute silence in Central London, with banners holding "British Soldiers Burn In Hell" & the burning of a poppy... If you don't like us English people paying respect for our brave fighters, then you know where the airport is. Disgusting, disrespectful people.
Seriously, they should be publicly bashed. To death.
