So Ive had the VR Calais for what seems like forever, & she is nearing 20yrs old, so it *seems* wise to look at a new car, last night ended up taking a VE Calais out, then back into the VR after.
Why does the VE seem so stiff & plastic like & the VR so comfy? Is the VR just like a pair of well worn favorite jeans? Will the VE ever feeel that way?
I cant help but feel the VE is 'sensible' & 'grown up' where as the VR is all about none of that *grins*
VE & VR both have part leather option, but the VR seems to do it so much better. Holdens went with this idea that the interior materials must now last the age of time thru grotty kids, rather than the idea that you can have nice things if you look after them.
I know after all Im buying a 'family' car but if I go from a Calais to a newer Calais, I should feel like Im gaining something right?
/rant
i guess you should feel comfortable in a newer car.
older cars definately are like a pair of well worn jeans. and the materials inside reflects that.
when you say plastic and stiff you mean the interior parts im guessing, like the dash sterring wheel etc.
they do look horrible. its like no effort was put in to keep a classy and stylish look, but an attempt to make it look all modern and sleek.
have you thought about looking at an older model like a vz?
comparing them to older cars, they have what feels like a leather or whatever, and isnt as much plastic (except for the cd player area etc)
if you dont feel comfortable, dont buy it. try out some other cars and see how they feel.
if its not exactly "love at first site" then is it the right one?
VY/VZ interiors are still full of plastic. Holdens went with really plastic interiors from VN onward.
Remember the VN Calais ? The 'flagship' Holden before the Statesman came out.
A big grey slab of plastic for a dash, plastic door trims with a small interior insert, and cloth seats. That was the Calais....
Compare that to the plush velour interiors of the old VB-VL SL/E/Calais.
Stick with what you have, if you love it.
My dads SS-V 2010 model is uncomfy as hell, but the leather needs time to get soft. Leave it in the sun for a week you'll be right lol
I bought a VT not long ago to "upgrade" from my VN Calais, I feel the same.
My VN has full leather and electrics ect, whoever owned it before me put a lot of money in to it handling and and drive train wise.
Now in the VT stock as a rock and feels gutless, the inside feels like I'm in a taxi. But it is nice on long trips at stock height where as the VN is very comfortable at first if I do a long drive I always get out sore. Probably cos its a smoother ride.
VT doesn't exactly handle better but it just handles diffrent. I still have both but will sell the VN Calais sooner or later and I know I will regret it but over time Ill probably get leather and electrics and upgrade suspension and handling, do something to give it some more low end power.
Going from VR to VE is a even bigger jump, was it a V6 or V8 you took for a test drive? I think over time it would grow on you but it might take a while.
Years ago, going from a Series 2 TRX to a VN Calais felt like I went from a tin car to a plastic car, didn't feel right at the time but now I'm so used to it, when the time comes to sell it will feel like saying good bye to a family member.
I think it's like wearing elastic vs wearing a belt. The sooner they phase out belts and stat making everything with elastic, the better off we will all be.
