just read this before...
Nail comes within millimetres of builder's brain
A US builder only realised he had shot himself in the top of the mouth with a nail gun when he felt blood dripping from his lips.
PHOTOS: Bizarre X-rays
A 9cm pin came within a millimetre of Los Angeles man Victor Benavidez's brain after the nail gun accidentally went off, the Sun reports.
"I'm not sure what happened but as I fell backwards the gun flipped and must have gone off again and fired a nail straight into my mouth," he said.
"It didn't hurt at all but I knew something was wrong - then I felt something with my tongue."
Unable to speak, Mr Benavidez had to attract the attention of his brother by throwing his hard hat at him.
Surgeons removed the nail with a dental extractor.
Doctors said if the nail had travelled any further into his head, it would have left him blind, brain damaged or dead.
Mr Benavidez is now back at work and using the same nail gun.
that last line really has to make you wonder.....
but still he is lucky to survive. guess those workplace safety adds also might make people think things through aswell

I suppose he's got the 'shit happens' attitude. I'd probably do the same.
What else is he supposed to do?
I've hit myself on the thumb with a hammer a few times, don't stop using hammers or buy a new one.
well if it shot him like it said it had, i would atleast get it sorted out, and checked to see if any faults would occur.
or maybe they did and they havent written it.
was just on the news and they were saying it was 1mm from causing everything to go wrong.
lets just say he is one lucky person.

nail guns in aus im pretty sure arent legal if they can be fired without being pressed against something... dunno if thats for all states or just nsw.
Yeah I am certain it must have a safety switch ie will not fire unless pushed down onto an object. I know people who removed the safety and all I can is how deadly they can be.
That would ####ing ruin your day.
They have whats known as "bump fire" where you hold the trigger down and every time you depress the safety it fires. Lots of carpenters use it in this mode because it's fast. The other option is once it's fired, you have to release the trigger and re-apply it (+ the safety) before it will shoot another nail. Pretty much every gun I have seen (even 30 yo ones) have a safety of some description.
Reaper
arent some also required to be horizontal or vertical (give or take a few degrees) to use. not on some strange angles?
we had that type at school. which yes also had a safety trigger.
i know there are the flooring ones, that the whole base has to be pretty much flat on the ground.
