I have a 1/8 scale nitro car as well as a 1/10 off road buggy. both of these have provided me hours of entertainment. I'd rather be bashing / racing on the track than to be at the golf course as most principles we learn in full scale automotive can be applied to them.
Toyworld are alright but I really don't like one of the blokes who works there so I avoid it when I can. Check out Stryke in Belco though, the guys there are always happy to help.

I have a Nitro RC car...in pieces....and an electric helicopter....in pieces.
Curiosity killed the car.
Calamity killed the copter.
I had a look at the 2wd rustler and it was $329 rtr. I'm going to do my research on this model and see how i go
I have a Genesis GST 7.7 as well as a modified Toyota Rock crawler.
Genesis
Toyota Crawler
Most people bag the Genesis as they do tend to break bits if you jump them a bit, but i have had nothing but fun with it. Maintenance wise, make sure it has no fuel in it after use (including the carby), you are supposed to put a couple of drops of oil (called "After run") in through the Glow plug hole after use, but from the forums most people just use a ATF instead of buying the special "After Run' oil.
Things I would recommend - get a Failsafe for it. The fail safe will shut the throttle off (on mine also applies the brakes) if it looses the transmitter signal (ie out of range or batteries flat/low) and a decent fuel filter.
Also check what fuel they recommend for it, my genesis runs on 25% nitro and follow the run-in proceedures or better still check the forums about the particular car and see if there other and better run-in proceedures.
Once thats done, enjoy they are a hoot, especially at WOTalthough I am still trying to dind somewhere i can get the GST into 3rd gear for a good run lol
Nah, all Rustlers are 2wd anyway lol. The VXL has a factory brushless and it's a bloody weapon with a LiPo battery. If you really want a ballistic car put a Novak Velociti 3.5R in it. It's essentially a full blown race motor which is used for guys who race on the road. It's absolutely insane in a dirt car... as I found out with my Lazer
shows you how much i know, I'll look into it more after christmas when i have more time, but everyone i seenthere in the section seemed friendly enough. I'll properly look it up and get the specs and things, and maybe talk to them about that model and see what they have to say. That novak motor sounds expensive though![]()
For starting out I'd grab a 1/8 planet brushless off ebay, in your price range, lipo ready and pretty durable. I got 1/10 version its not as durable lol, this is mine havin a bash on nimh battery.
That goes faster then what i was epecting for an electric one. I still need to go back to the toy store to have a look at the rustler brushless
Yer they go pretty good and are very low maintenance compared with nitro/gas. If you go with LiPo power you have to take care with balance charging them and watch the voltage levels in the car because if you discharge them too much while driving the battery will be destroyed, you can buy buzzer alarms that go off at the lowest safe voltage so you can hear when to stop driving, I'm still yet to make the switch to LiPO batteries, a big mah nimh still gets 15-20 mins full throttle runtime on a brushless. RC has come a long way in a short time.
Most ESC's have lipo cut or a buzzer, so they dont go too low the f up.
I drive my RC drifter atleast 1hr min a week, soo much fun, lay out a track with footy markers n bam fun to be had.
I usually average about 30min outta a 5000mah lipo, bout 20min outta NIMH
Well just my luck. Went in today to possible buy it but it was gone..
RAWR THREAD DIG!!!!!!!
Ok now thats over, didnt want to start a new thread but im basically looking at getting one of these a little after Christmas. Any tips or what to look for would be great. Im looking second hand not new and ive been told too look for Truggy branded cars?
I dont mind petrol or electric i just want something that would be a hoot.
'ucwepn' - vid looks wicked this is what id be looking towards, but id need something that could take a little beating.
This is one off ebay that cought my eye: RC car
Any tips would be great links or info please...
Thanks in advance,
Mick.
get the hsp planet or a redcat (same thing but different branding) 1:8 brushless electric, thats what I would be buying if i was buying but I sold my other 1:10 from that vid a while back, might get a planet soon, they are bigger and tougher than the 1:10 and they are lipo ready with fans, metal drivegear and stuff already fitted. They are pretty cheap on ebay

That 1:10 one from the vid was fun and reliable if you check it over once in a while and give all the screws a little tighten when needed and clean the dirt out of it, I was playing with it in the street one time jumping speedhumps (fun lol) and flying around the corner where I live, It understeered into the gutter and smashed the front wheel off and bent both lefthand driveshafts, rebuilt it with ebay parts and it was as good as new lol.

From personal experience and if your like me a little bit rough with these things get a GV Cage with the upgraded steel cage joiners and metal gear steering servo.
Its pretty much indestructible, the cage protects all the hardware so you can flip it, roll it, jump it do what ever an it keeps going. I will highly recommend them an there are plenty of spare parts for them to witch is handy. (never needed any tho, other then a new muffler).

ok here is mine. i love it its fast, strong, and very fun to use.. jump, rolls etc.. as long as u keep the maintenance up on em.. oiling bearings, oiling cylinder if ur not going to use it for a while.
if u get a new one, run it in properly first and on a rich mix for about 5 tanks no high revs..
remember these do 30,000 rpm at flack bicky. Thunder Tiger EB4 S2 1/8 Scale
and a vid of her
These look like ALOT of fun, Can i look to you guys for tip on how to pull things apart and whatnot later?, as i know absolutely nothing about them!
You dont have any issues with things braking, as other have said and it turning into a money pit, obviously i am expected to spend every now and than but just not over the top?
Everyone will tell you that electric cars are kids toys but I can assure you that's not the case. I'm building a speed run car at the moment with a 10,500Kv motor. That means it will do 10,500 rpm PER VOLT I put in to it. I'm using a 2 cell LiPo battery which is rated (when charged) at 8.4v; so you do the maths.
Here is a video of RPM at the rear wheels. It's running tyres with a diameter of 104mm and pulls just over 8750rpm which translates to 170Km/h (keep in mind this is without road or wind resistance).
Personally I'd stay away from HSP and GV. Peopleswear by them but I much prefer bigger brands with a much wider range upgradable and spare parts. Traxxas are great for a first car and I'd HIGHLY reccomend the Slash 4x4. It takeS more of a beating than Rhianna. They come with almost everything you need to run straight out of the box. If you buy one from the States you will need to get an Aussie charger for it. Out of the box it will do about 55Km/h and with a 3 cell LiPo and gear change should be good for near 100Km/h. I'll put up a few pics of mine.
If you want more info just ask, I'm pretty keen into these things and I currently have 9 cars and 1 boat (all electric).
How much do you want to spend?
Having owned both petrol and electric Id never go back to petrol. They are messy and a pain in the ass. Electric can be made to go as fast and faster then petrol and no mess or hassle with tuning etc.
