It really annoys me how the quality of alot of things, electronics being one, have gone seriously downhill over time.
An example is my home theatre that i bought probably 6 months ago, which was working fine yesterday, just broke down today out of the blue
What other similar experiences have people have with products breaking down in no time??
None, buy quality components and never have issues.
Quality costs money. Sadly people think LG, Samsung, Sony etc are all quality.

What constitutes quality then Minux?
Samsung are quality for the money you pay, not saying they're the greatest thing around, but they're certainly not a rip off. My 5yr old LCD telle is still going strong.
40 dollar camera lasts not even a year, 40000 dollar camera lasts forever
why would you want a 40,000 camera ?
TV studio's have bloody expensive camera's but yes, I asked the same thing...

Because their hectic? But I think my relatively new ps3 is getting a bit dodgy, which is sad because it only started after one of their updates. And sometimes cheap shit lasts much longer than the expensive stuff, $100 hammer drill at work with heavy use, and no one can break it but that is Australian made, reasonably cheap TV in my lounge room is still going strong as well.
the problem is, we all expect the cheapest prices.
Manufacturers have to resort to cheaper components, and lower quality control in order to meet those expectations. And let's face it, technology is CHEAP these days, something has got to give.
I remember when I bought my old 51cm CRT Panasonic TV about 15 years ago. I paid nearly $600 back then, which is probably equivalent to at least double that figure in todays money.
Last week, I finally upgraded to a 100hz HD 106cm LED/LCD. After some wheeling & dealing, I paid just over $1400 for it.
Of course my LCD picture quality is amazing as are it's features. And it makes the old 51cm screen look insignificant. But my 15 year old CRT is still running perfect, even after literally thousands of hours of running time. The only thing I've had to do is replace the batteries in the remote. I wonder if my LCD will still be running as trouble free in 15 years....
car parts are the same. The old German Bosch ignition coils & other electrical components used to last forever. I notice my 2 failed Bosch ignition coils were manufactured in China....
I think phones these days are pretty crappy. I got an old Nokia brick that still works fine but my new Nokia X6 is crap this is my second one in a year and it keep breaking and turning itself off all the time.

minux, i"ll take my vs v6 over your rice-burner any day of the week.
In responce the the OP, my xbox was 4 days out of the 1yr warranty they come with and it decided it didnt want to read discs anymore so i know what ya mean. I got annoyed with it and belted it... its worked fine ever since...
lol@people thinking phones are quality, iphone especially
i paid a MINT for my denon home theater amp but thing is once you see inside it at soldering joints, inductive coils etc you know you paid a LOT for very good reason.
samsung are junk btw. as mentioned, people think that since they are paying (what they think to be) a lot of money, they are buying quality. sadly they are mistaken. its only when you buy top of the range that you get quality.
lol, i have a pioneer home theatre system in my room, broke last night after 6 or 7 years !
i have a 42" pioneer plasma thats probobly the same age, way better than some of the new plasmas iv seen lately.
i have a rear-projector tv that is like 10143245354 years old that still works PERFICT.
i also have a cheap "magnavox" 42" flatscreen thats going dead its not even 2 years old
but it really is sad at the quality that some big brand food labels now.
have you had fanta or 2 minute noodles recently?
tastes DECUSTING!
and the packet of noondles is like 3x smaller than it used to be.
I never said they were high quality, they're just good for what you actually pay for them.
I do not doubt that you would, thus proving Australians do not care about the quality of a product only about whinging about the inferior crap when it continually dies.
fact is, Australians buy cheapest crap possible 95% of the time and get sucked in to buying cheap brands that are household names.

Its quite simple really.
Most of the items that people buy now that are cheap are designed to be throwaway items.
Technology is moving quite quickly so there is always something better around the corner.
If you have something that you want to last you a while you pay more for it, what the point of getting a high quality top of the range mobile phone when the next generation can do more, do it faster and do it better than the last.
TV's were pretty much the same for the most part for many years and then look what has come out in the last 10 years. LCD & Plasma, Full HD, Bigger screens for less, 3D Tv's and just around the corner is 3D TV's which don't require glasses.
If people bought a TV which lasts them 20 years, they dont get that excuse to upgrade to the next big thing.
Stuff is cheap and does not last cause that's what people want
I know whats said about the lower quality brands is true, but i think its still pretty rediculous for products at even a low-mid range level to be so easily broken or fault.
Sometimes you cant afford or dont need to bother buying the highest quality things, but you should still expect a product to at least reach its petty one year warranty before trashing itself.
Also in our house we still have a 25+ year old amplifier and probably similar aged fridge and they still go strong and would have been good quality in their time. you wouldn't see that life out of products today
Well, toys for kids. Growing up in the 70s, I played with matchbox cars that would last a lifetime no matter if they were left in the rain, slammed or tossed. Sure the paint might chip off, but it would still be looking like a die cast model of a real car. nothing broken!
Nowadays, kids toys seem to last as long as their attention span.
exactly.
So much stuff is cheap chinese crap. though some of it is good/ok, majority is junk.
