Electronic Pickpocketing Targets Credit and Debit Cards with RFID Technology - WREG
Yeah... so I'm glad I don't have one of those new cards they are advertising on TV lately.
You know, with the douchebag who does an army roll over a merc bonnet.
This is clearly a case of technology being developed to to be convenience without any consideration given to security.
Thought?
Yeah, I use the PayPass thing at the local IGA sometimes, it's convenient but given the choice of having it or not having it, I would go without. They began the limit at $35, and have now increased it to $100 at certain stores that use it. It's getting easier and easier to lose your money in the name of convenience. I find it a bit shit that you don't have a choice from some banks as to whether you have that function or not. It's always there, you get to choose whether you use it or not. Doesn't stop anyone else from using it though.
Meh I dont care, after all it is the banks money they are stealing
The only card I have in my wallet is a credit card for this reason of theft. Better the banks money stolen than my own.

Its funny because when I try to scan my Go-Card (thats our public transport card for non-QLDers) it won't scan if its in my wallet, I worked out its because its also trying to scan my MasterCard chip at the same time. If I take my CC out then it works no problem.

i reckon if you lost money that way the banks would have to pay the money... they gave you a faulty product they take the blame for it... especially if you didnt want a card with that technology in it in the first place
Might have to start making wallets with electronic sheilding. Shouldnt be too hard.
thats been going on for a while.
its probably nearly impossible to make the cards 100% safe until it requires signatures, pins etc. and has your photo on it. even then it wont be 100% safe.
apparently the photo technology will be coming out soon. will make everything safer.
you can put on the back of your card "need further evidence" or whatever, which means you need a drivers licence etc to check and confirm its you.
was told this by bankers/ex-bankers
as for me. id rather pay with cash. take $50 or whatever a week and know thats all i can spend. makes me think twice before wanting to break my last $20 or whatever.
I wonder if the guy demonstrating how to swipe info has anything to do with the business promoting rfid blocking wallets?
The built in farraday cage in those wallets is probably just a piece of alfoil stitched into the lining of the wallet. A piece of foil placed where your notes go should work.
Technology is growing fast, but it doesn't mean hackers and crooks aren't already ahead -.-
Thats why the limits at $35 per transaction to limit bank losses!! I guess from the banks point of view how much attention do sales people pay to your sig any way
I guess the low lives in the world can now get some big mac's for a while when they find your card!! till your card is cancelled!!
Cheers
