    Exclamation Iphone - help me

    Hey guys,

Just got a 16g iphone that is jailbroken with cydia and installous. Do not ask me what that means as i have no idea!

I want to somehow get on the internet on the iphone using the internet on my laptop. I think I have vista on the laptop and the iphone is running the latest firmware.

Any suggestions on how to do this? Any info must be in simple terms as I am useless with computers and iphones.... obviously!

    Cheers guys

    This is what comes up:

Settings - Wi Fi - Not Connected
    WiFi - On
    Choose A Network - Other >
Ask to Join Networks - On

Also the laptops Wi Fi is turned on with the little light flashing.
The laptop is running cable internet, if that makes a difference...

Sounds like you're trying to get tethering to work, ie. phone mooching internet directly from laptop, not directly from router. Can't really help on how to do that, just clarifying what it is you're after

Hey guys, sorry for the confusing description.

Stressball is correct - I want to access internet directly from laptop. Not through router as that just confuses me even more.

I think i should download the Iphone instructions and read it!!

Cheers for the advice guys, will have a go at some of the suggestions after work

Basically, you need a wireless router, soon as you have a wireless router it'll pick it up in the Wifi - section, then you'll pick the name.

If it ISN'T wireless and it's by cord, then no.

Connecting directly to a wireless router should be easier than tethering. You find the wifi settings on the phone, click Add New Network or something along those lines. It should scan for nearby networks. When your network appears, press that and it will ask you for a passcode, assuming your wifi has one. Put it in, and voila, it should be connected. Much easier than trying to use tethering.

you need to go into network settings on the computer, and 'bridge' together the cable internet and wifi connections.

the laptop will then be working as a wireless access point. google should be able to help.

No he's not. It's been explained MULTIPLE times. He's trying to access the LAPTOP'S internet from the iPhone. Like a reverse tether. It can be done. Just not very easily.

Having a wireless router is the easier option for you if as you say your are not overly competant with networking and iPhones etc.

    Cheers

Cheers for all the info guys.

I did try the above methods a fair few times but with no luck unfortunately. I have set up the ad-hoc network through the laptop and managed to join the Iphone using the laptop wi-fi. The iphone detects the IP and connects with the laptop but will still not activate the internet for some reason.

At this stage I think the easiest option is getting a wireless router. Am I correct in thinking that I can access the internet if I plug a wireless router in at the end of the current cabled internet connection? Then I could run both laptop and Iphone through Wi-Fi using the wireless router??

    My head hurts...

if u buy a wireless router..... you can plug a network cable from modem in the WAN port on the back of the wireless router

the wireless router should automaticly then be assigned an ip address range.
you then need to log on to the wireless router and set the wireless properties eg.. wpa password... otherwise the whole street will be enjoying your free high speed internet
if you setup your internet on your modem you shouldnt have too many dramas with setting up the router.

finally both your laptop and iphone and ipad and anything else wireless in your house should have no problems connecting

I am curious why you dont just simply access the internet on your iPhone though? Curious..but not going to lose sleep on it if you don't want to share that info
