    Default Perth speed limits reduced

40km/h speed limit for CBD - The West Australian

I don't see how this is going to stop hoons, it may stop the servarity(spelling) of the accident but what does that have to do with hoon behaviour?

It doesn't say anything about hoons.

It's all about pedestrian safety, and in the CBD I don't think it's a terrible idea, as long as they change the traffic light cycles to suit...

They have had 50k speeds in SA streets for a few years - 60 feels so fast in back streets now. The biggest issue is the signage and the coppers setting cameras just inside the signs. Upset lots of people that use to sit on 65kph - they get pinged 15k's over the limit now.

50 in the CBD will be OK - really is not that much slower and it's proven to save a life or 2 when cars and people blindly walking on roads get together.

It will not change a thing, idiot pedestrians will stop step onto roadways without looking, idiot drivers will still drive stupidly. More nanny crap.

They did the same thing in Brisbane CBD last year. I'm not too sure if it has decreased the number of pedestrian vs. car accidents, but it has certainly brought the police doing traffic duty in big time. They've even started using speed camera vans in the CBD!!!

I'm very happy with the 50k speed limit on the back streets were the real people live and play. No doubt some zonings are for revenue rasing - you will never stop the Govt from doing this - if it's not speed cameras and the like its taxes.

50k speed limit around the CBD is much safer in general to all that have to be there - be it in a car or on foot.

Doesn't surprise me. This place is a nanny state.

Can't recall, but I think WA pedestrians have right of way on the road anywhere, be it a zebra crossing or not.

Personally I think people here should just learn that cars will hurt, and work around it like everywhere else. But that's just me.

People live and play on the road???? I can understand 50 km/h through someones house where people live and play , but roads are for cars, drivers should NEVER be responsible for pedestrians on the roadway except at crossings etc. It is an insane law.

We had the Brisbane CBD brought down to the 40k speed limit about a year ago. Wouldn't make a difference cause with all the traffic and lights thats about as fast as you can go.

Is that really confirmed? I'm pretty sure drivers have right of way.

Can't speak for WA, but in Vic, the only place pedestrians DO NOT have right of way is at roundabouts. Everywhere else cars must give way, I am fairly sure this is a federal road act legislation.

I think motorways are the same. But yeah. Pedestrians have right of way. As it should be too. Drivers should always be able to avoid pedestrians if they're aware of their surroundings and driving to the conditions. That doesn't mean you will always avoid them because there's always going to be twats that just step out into traffic.

Typical, Nanny State Laws, im all for saving peoples lives but soon we wont be able to crap with out written expressed permission in triplicate from the Government, then have the EPA come and inspect before we flush that we wont endanger and plants or animals, then receive paper work which states you disposed of it properly which you must keep a record of for 30 years.

    revolution any one?

I disagree, a car on a road should always have right of way. A pedestrian can stop in an instant, a car cannot. Pede3strians should be banned from roads unless it is at a crossing. All intersections SHOULD have painted crossings in where pedestrians then always have the right of way. I know someone who put a man in a wheelchair for life. The man stepped out from in front of a van drunk. Guy couldnt even hit the breaks because of lack of notice, yet, he was found to be at fault.

yea brisbane CBD is like a parking lot most days....especially around eagle street the speed limit could be 100 and you would still be only doin a top of 30-50 max

If you're going to enter into an area where there are much bigger, faster and deadlier things than you, it should have right of way!

if cities had really good public transport systems would people need to drive their cars in the city?
    just an idea really.

as for the right of way, go into the boating rules... you dont see a tanker giving way to mr in a boat or on a jetski do you? its the small guy that has to get outta the way or change course

    Yes.

I refuse to use public transport, even taxis. Too many filthy people around leaving their mark.
