Default Crash Body Proposes 120km/h Speed Limiter

Crash body proposes 120km/h maximum | speed limiters

I dunno if im the only one who thinks this way but if your doing 110 you can still do something stupid no matter how the car is "setup" to behave and kill yourself. Better drivers would do more than all the technology in the world could hope to achieve

    Not having read the article.

Isn't this something the Japanese have? (like a speed limit defender).
There's also something like the fuel cut defenders which do the opposite... but I'm sure they'll get some sort of thing in there that'll stop ur car from going over a set limit. This would work for the majority of drivers because they wouldn't bother spending money to speed.

Bleh, it's been suggested before and never implemented. It'll take a while before they convince people that controlling very nearly every single aspect of their lives is a good idea, until then it's just a suggestion. It's only a few steps away from the 1984esque situation of having a set time to get to and from work before you're disciplined by the authorities and not just your boss.

good point about the track days & drags etc.
either way, people would just bypass them. Check out the amount of truckies on the road who bypass their 100kph speed limiters....

Cars in Japan are limited to 180kph speed cuT defenders are used to bypass them.

Fuel cut defenders are used to bypass ecu restriction on fuel so you can run more boost

i've been thinking for a bit and realised they would never bring them in... the state goverments would lose millions of dollars in lost revenue from speeding fines
also id just buy a brand new car just before the system came out and keep it for the rest of my life lol... stock v6 commodore beating a newer SSV down the strip lol that would be something every car enthusiast would commit suicide over

oorrr maybe we could follow egypts lead lol

retro fitting costs to all the cars would cost too much. wont happen. and i'm sure as hell not paying for my cars and bikes to get restricted.

    fingers crossed.

What makes them think this would do any difference.

Its not like people are offing themselves in record numbers on the freeway.

If speed is a factor, its generally in suburban streets and major roads roads and those who do 100 in 60 and 80 zones arent going to stop because theyre limited to 120.

stupid idea because it wont do a thing and would be better to increase driver training and have defensive driving coarse as standard before getting a licence

and look at the NT they put a speed limit on the hwy of 130km/h and the death toll increased instead of going down

I like that idea of defensive driving course, mainly cause I had to do one (reluctantly) and it turned out to be the greatest fun ever.

Like our beloved 130 speed limit thing, states will only change the rules if there is something in it for them, ie $$$. So if said "crash body" wanted to seriously implement this, they'd have to start offering serious inducements to state, territory and federal governments before this would even start to become a reality. And not to worry about the revenue raising, people will still speed: when it's 40, speeders will do 60. When it's 60, speeders will do 80, and so on.

In my opinion, it's not the speed that needs to change, it's the education and mentality. Drivers should be aware of their cars capabilities, the effect of adverse road conditions and handling, the necessary maintenance for day to day running etc etc. And not through boring as lectures either, but real practical stuff, like the defensive driving, give people a real chance to learn these skills. If you had better trained, more aware drivers on the road, you wouldn't have quite as many easily avoidable accidents.

Dunno, just my opinion. I've got hundreds of them.

I like Jezza's idea - I did a defensive driving course last year and after doing it I think it should be made mandatory for all drivers, young and old, inexperienced and experienced.

But anyway, whats the point? If this did happen you'd soon get people suggesting "ohnoes, 120 km/h is too fast, we need speed limiters that limit cars to 100", and lets face it - even 50 km/h is still fast enough to do serious damage. How about we teach people how to drive before we start wasting money on speed limiters that will do nothing but waste money and disadvantage people.

One word (well acronym) GPS.... it will unlock you in certain locations that allows you to speed.

I always imagined a sunken rail type system that is in the middle of the lane in which a locking pivot pin locks in and can be engaged or disengaged at any time letting you overtake turn at intersections of course it would only need to be used on highways and freeways, I only thought about this after losing both my mother in 96 and my aunt (her sister) and 5yr old cousin .
    RIP kara, mum and trisha.

i'm in the transport industry and i can safely say that all of our trucks have the 100km/h limiters still there. we're actually thinking of changing the limiters to 95km/h, because you all know the traffic doesnt move at a perfect 100 km/h and this will stop the trucks holding up people in the overtaking lanes.

but i do know that some operators get rid of their speed limiters, but you usually find its the smaller operators that are doing it.
