HUGE earthquake in Christchurch NZ. only 6.3 on the Richter scale however it was only 5km deep which is fairly shallow.

multiple collapsed building in the city centre. unconfirmed but multiple fatalities reported

ok im a bit confused, i thought all NZ buildings had to be "earthquake proof", or is that just the north island?

not seen a lot. they showed pictures of the RSA building which had been flattened by a rock the size of a small building.

seen pics of one house where liquefaction has filled the back yard.

liquefaction has come through the concrete floor at the Chch branch of my missus work. weird seeing mud in the middle of a office space.

they are now using personal vehicles to move injured persons because they have run out of ambulances.

they are, but in reality Chch has been shaking since the 7.1 quake last year. i guess buildings can only take so much

Well some good news, since the earthquake yesterday at 12.51pm there were about 120 people rescued from collapsed buildings till 1am from then till 8am about another 20 people were rescued.

a urban rescue unit from Queensland has arrived on the scene within the last 1/2 hr. cheers guys

more specialist units in route from the US, Taiwan, Singapore, UK, Japan and some more bloody Aussies

75 confirmed dead so far.

just to shed some light on the events over the last few months, since the original earthquake on 4th September last year there have been some 4000 aftershocks up until the 6.3 quake yesterday. many of those measuring 5 and above on the Richter scale
