I am looking at selling the commodore and picking up a Forby
I have no use for a sedan, and the Calais Chews fuel like a hooker on a coke binge and just overall is expensive to maintain insure ect. ect. and it don'st suit my current life style.
I have had a bit of an indepth dig around and a family friend is offering her 1999 Parado for around 9K
It has 260K on it which i would to know is this a Lot? Been a land cruiser i wouldn't think so.
Anyone had any Experience with them off road, I am not talking rock climbing, more like off the beaten track.
What should i look for about these models is there any sort of common #### ups with them?
I have a couple motor cross bike and this is so much more better suited as i can take them camping. Instead of having to tow the bikes close to them camp sites and having to ride back to get them.
Petrol. I know would love a diesel.
I wouldnt get a petrol Prado, everyone I know who has bought a petrol prado has regretted it. I have heard one person I know getting 32L/100km unloaded on the highway, all stock, thats just scary. I know people with Petrol Cruisers and they love them, just not Prado's, wierd.
The prado setup right can be quite a capable little car for mild tracks, on the latest 4wd action they have a new prado and it went up some good tracks, though it hopped up like a kangaroo it made it to the top.
From personel preference given the oppurtunity/budget I would hang off and get a Proper landcruiser if you want to do any serious road, but if its just mild tracks, the Prado will get you out of shit. Fit a winch and decent tyres and it will be right.
The Navara's and Patrols share the same engines (just about) is it the same for the Prado and the Landcruiser and Hilux?
I say this due to the fact the the Prado has a 2.7L efi engine and the Hilux has a 2.7 efi engine in the 95+ Models.
You would take the deduction that the prado's engine and transmission i would only assume has the same durability as a hilux, which is pretty much bullet proof as they would be fairly similar.
theres probably a billion toyota/4x4 forums where u can ask these questions
Yep if you think your calais chews fuel dude, dont even consider a petrol Prado. And also 260k isnt a lot... for a diesel cruiser. For a petrol its still gettin high.
Most of my mates went from modified cars to forbys. They are pretty much spending the same money on modifications, fuel etc if not more with 4 wheel driving. If it's to save money don't think it's a good choice however if you're going to go off road seriously it will be a good choice. Friend has a turbo diesal rodeo and it's more than capable for mild off roading, almost as good as another friends GQ patrol which was a monster haha.
go for the 90's nissan patrol/maverick, blood bullet proof those bastards, just rust has gotten to most of them. unless your after something a little more modern.
Okay i will scrap that.
What about a Duel cab Navara? 3.0L Turbo Diesel. I have seen some examples running around for anywhere between 13-16K and there 2002-2006 models.
4x4 petrol, regardless of what make or model, suck the juice more than a hooker on friday nights. I'd spend a bit more coin and get yourself a diesel, you'll be glad you did.
This i know already, i currently have a good hooker at the moment and i know how much juice she can take in one load.
Who wants to by a Calais lol.
I think it will be better of to have the dual cab ute. This way i can chuck what ever i want in the back. The bikes, camping gear. Can throw a tarp over it and sleep in it.
I think unless you have a family a dual cab would be better suited then a Wagon.
Dual cab is an excellent choice. I've had landcruiser wagons and they're ok but if you want to chuck all sorts of #### in the back it can become noisey to ride in. Dual cabs eliminate this problem and you still have a back seat. To give you an idea i sold my 02 dualcab rodeo 2.8 litre diesel with 180000 kays for $14000, it had some extras on it fo that price and was in great condition.
i would stay away from it with that many ks
a mate of mine has a landcruiser with 300ks on it and everything is just about totally stuffed even though it has been well maintained all it's life
we've got a 09 suzuki grand vitara and a vz ute both autos and the suzuki averages 10l/100 km whereas the ute averages around 12l/100 km
had the suzuki on the beach several times and out in the bush and it does it all quite capably it's only real downfall is the lack of ground clearance
it tows my 5m fibreglass half cabin boat quite easily as well.
If you really want something reliable anywhere off road it'd be no petrol and no computer. My dad had a relatively new for the times Pajero a few years ago, well almost 20, and paid the price. Sure things have changed.. Holiday cut short and a bucket of money from breaking down in the gorge country in the north of WA. Funny thing is my wife and I did it all in a HK Holden 10 years before with the road they had up there then(1984) and repairs were relatively easy, used to stop and grab things that tended to break off Holdens dumped along the roads and visit remote tips for parts. Was a cool trip. Anyone know a guy called Tony Ross with a daughter called Kylie? A nice bloke I met twice on different sides of Au, Broome then Cairns, and wouldn't mind meeting again.
Edit: The old man was a HD Mechanic, used to run the Rottnest Island lighthouse generators at one stage many years ago. Was an Engineer in the army, served in Korea. The Pajero still ended up on the back of a truck a few thousand Ks back to Perth and them on a bus.
Edit2: Guess how much the HK cost us? The closest to $400 wins!

I will probably be looking at picking up a dual cab navara. from the reviews and the price of the ute, you can't really go past it.
Navaras are a pretty good thing in my experience.
Agreed with some of the comments already though, if buying a 4x4, go with a diesel.

More thank likely a D22. 3.0L Diesel out of the Patrols. Although there not inter cooled i would more than likely make that simply modification, straight up.
Or you can work for me and get a work hiluxor landcruiser?!?!?!?1
