Default What to use to Wash Internal Engine Parts with

Last weekend we took our bike out to the glass house mountains, which is a mix of extreme 4X4 and Bike trails, with mixed surfaces of gravel, sand, silk and mud.

One of my bikes ate shit and i got it bogged and submerged and it appears that the crank case breather sucked a heap of shit into the engine (pick attached)

That stuff is a mixture of clay and sand, freaking nasty stuff

I am obviously going to have to do a tare down to clean in, but what cleaning product should i use to wash the parts???????

I was thinking water would be fine? as long as its completely dry before it is re-installed.

yeah kero first then mild detergent and water. make sure you have a bunch of white rags and keep washing and wiping till there is no colour left on the rag.

    Rightyo

So i guess the best idea would be to have a large bucket of kero and a soft tooth brush, making sure it is wiped clean and stored on a clean service.

nah the best idea is to have a gerney (high pressure hot water washer) failing that a regular high pressure washer, failing that a hose, THEN failing that a bucket of soapy water.

the kero is to just get the oil off, then you wanna get the kero off

    Ahhhhhh!!!!.

See the engine is more or less new.

so what if it do this...... Use the Girne to blast the shit of the parts. Then use the kero to get what ever oily grimy stuff is left and then just use water again to get the kero off.

if you use kero first, then gerney, itll make life a tonne easier. kero can be as much of a pain to get out of the oil gallerys as old oil and silt.

remember kero neutralises oil. so you want it all gone before you reassemble.

    Ohhh shit!

Petrol, or brake cleaner - if you've got deep pockets... You want something that evaporates and doesn't leave a residue behind.
Compressed air to blow out all the tight spots, oil galleries etc.

And, may I just re-inforce what you've said already... "Complete strip down, and re-assembly"

Not just blast the bottom of the case while its still all together!

Is a complete strip down and acid dip out of the question?

why not wash out with diesel? cheaper than all of the above, once cleaned out I would give it a light run up to opperating temp then drop all fluids whilst hot and change, then take it for a good run and drop oils out again whilst hot.

    cheers

Ended up not having to strip it completely

It was blocked at the oil filter which stopped it going through the whole case so i ended up flushing it out with water the kero, then water to wash the kero away. Let let it soak and dry in WD-40 to disperse the water over night.

It'll take a few oil changes but it should come good again.

i strongly disagree. petrol leaves a residue and also is slightly caustic. get it on any bearings and you may as well throw them in the bin
