    Default Umm...wow...

Not sure what to say about this...I stumbled across the article by accident. How is this not headlining news?

Yeah I saw it earlier in the week. Their country, their culture, their rules... Moral of this story is to simply not go to shit hole countries with backwards laws.

It raises another question though: should we, as a people with very different values and believing that blaming a victim (apparently) is wrong, try to change "their culture, their rules"?

Maybe ask: Would you walk past after observing a person being assaulted or intervene?

Is there any difference to permitting this?

unfortunately these types of draconian laws are all to common in certain parts of the world.

what really grates on me is that they expect us to abide by there laws when we visit there countries and yet when they move to ours they plainly tend to disregard our laws and our ways and then to really rub it in they still expect us to abide by there customs in our own country..

a few years ago we had a iraqi family at work (working as casual labour) and the young fella's took great pleasure in showing anybody who would watch a little video on there cell phones showing a man (hostage) being beheaded using just a knife yet i'm sure they had been in iraq that they would have been on the wrong side of that same knife because they were of the wrong religion or tribe or for what ever reason they were refugees in out country!!!!!

    Yeah right, go Team America!

Just because we have beliefs that mean we think it's so wrong, doesn't mean it is to them. People have a choice. And if they majority were to ask for "our" (western society) help to change their regimes, then sure. But until they want it for themselves, who are we to impose our way of life? Unless it's oppression - but that's not what we're talking about here. As has been evident in Bahrain, people want change. And they're likely to get it too. It's far too important for the UAE royal families to not have peace and stability. They are for the most part liked by the people of the region however when change is mandated, it comes.

Leave them to govern themselves unless there's oppression/genocide/etc or something then it's not up to ANYONE to step in and try and force change.

Correct! We should not be tolerant of those who try and force their views on other people or live by their views or way of life if it is in contradiction with mainstream Australian values. We SHOULD be tolerant of diversity however. It's a fine line and hard to explain exactly what I mean.

Poor women. The hotel will be loaded so hopefully she cops a nice payout. This is why I'll never stay in a country like this for longer than a week or two. Pull a root and get thrown in jail, and UAE is by far the most tolerant country in the Middle East hate to think what would have happened to her in some of the others.

And we get called racist if we question leftys who want them to be able to use sharia law.

There is no evidence she was raped. The men were not braught to trial for rape so no evidece has been braught before a jury supporting her claims. All we have is the word of this article whitch look to have been writen to entertin rather than support fact. In our country they are innocent until proven guilty. It says that the three men where jailed over the "assult" but the article does not mention any trial for any assult only an individual's "belief" that they were jailed. My best bet is that they were jailed for the same reason she was. For Adultry.
