Hello all,
Here is a thread to get tongues wagging - what religion are you?
I will begin. I was baptised in the Uniting Church, attended sunday School up until the age of 9. at 14-15 discovered buddhism, went into it until the age of 17, started up again at 21 to get over a drinking problem. By 23 I had rejected all notions of organised religion due to a viewing of monty python's 'life of brian', at 24 I read Richard Dawkins 'The God Delusion' and discovered Athiesm, which I observe to this day (I am now 28). In summary I believe that god does not exist due to a lack of scientifically validated proof, and a mountain of evidence for the creation and development of life and the universe from rational, scientific perspectives. I feel most organised religions have marginalised women, non-europeans, and GLBT. I do beleive that jesus, buddha etc did exist but they were not divine.
The floor is open, please try to keep it civil lol!

I'm a Death Eater - Atheist. Until there is Scientific proof that god does existent or he really does come down from above, then he is he just another fictional character in this non-fictional world. If anyone court that report on 60 minutes Sunday night, those people were real right royal fu&king nut jobs "I have the bible on my side so therefore I have more then you"
I felt like picking up that bible and smacking it over that guy's head and telling him to wake up to himself.
Anyway, that's just my view and opinion![]()
If it's not a Symptom its not relevant, and if its not relevant I don't care!
LaVeyan Satanist.
I dont worship Satan, its completely different to Theistic Satanism. Its closer to being a form of Atheism.
According to my facebook profile, I'm a Toranatheist.![]()
I'm Agnostic...I won't say that I don't believe there is a God - for all we know there might be...but on the other hand, as others said, there's no actual documented evidence that there is.
Grennan and sash, I did a presentation on Satanism ay my Catholic high school. End result was that the teacher convertednot so much a religion as a way of life, a bit like Buddhism.
I'm an atheist, have been since I was maybe.. 12 or 13. Raised as Catholic, went to Catholic schools. During Study of Religion in years 10-12, I had long, frequent debates with the teacher about the Bible.
Incidentally OP, I have the God delusion in audiobook form. If I weren't an atheist before, I certainly would be after listening to it. Brilliant book.

born a catholic but never believed any of the bs! then i started learning science in high school and realised that has a more logical explanation
Raised as a Jehovah's Witness but since my early teens I dont practice religion (im 24 now). Im open to the existence of a god but I just hate how humans choose to worship their gods and use religion as an excuse to cast judgment on others despite the bible telling them not to judge their fellow man.
I study science and I agree that it makes more literal sense than religion however I dont believe the bible is intended to be taken literally. I get a bit frustrate by some atheists and people like Richard Dawkins using Science and logic to show flaws in the Bible without acknowledging the fact that a lot of it is written in metaphor and people should be free to interperate it however they see fit
I just don't care
its simple, easier and involves less effort on my behalf unlike other people pretending that they have an imaginary friend
When I read the LaVey Satanic Bible, I understood the meaning of Satanism to be self-worship in that each person is the devil because we are the source of evil. I could see it's reach into the disbelief and those easily convinced. He wrote about a lot of topics that were close to home for many in a manner of propaganda and so on. But by the end of the book, I formed my own opinion and I don't need to be a Satanist to be self-worshiping.
I am yet to get through all of the Christian Bible. So I make no justified comment on that.
I have studied Judaism and Buddhism. I find the Jewish faith very arrogant but tolerant. Probably the most peaceful and accepting faith is Buddhism, this also holds the most draw for me through its concepts of Karma, rebirth and so on.
However, my logical side also recognises the draw of Atheism and the natural approach of Wiccan.
At the end of the day, does it really matter? In life I live by this rule - let others live how they want if it makes them happy and as long as it doesn't negatively affect others. I know Satanists, Chrisitians, Buddhists, Hindus, Wiccans and Atheists, none of them are extreme and none of them feel the need to shove it in anyone's faces or 'convert' others. To me, that is a good religion and a good follower. But that said, I've bumped into extremists of religion, and I find it isn't the religion to blame but the people following a very extreme version of it.
What do I believe/follow? I don't know. I guess I believe in a higher power, guess I'm a trekker/Battlestar Gallaticarer :P mmm Starbuck *lick* she is my godess![]()
Any religion is all interpretation and faith. To those that want scientific proof that there is a God, faith has no value. That is why it is called faith, the belief that there is a God without needing proof.
Sash and Grennan, to be a Satanist, you are acknowledging the existence of God. Without God and the faith in His existence, there would be no Satan or any belief that he exists either. Even though LaVey doesn't admit the existance of either deity, by naming it the Church of Satan, he is infererring he does exist.
I don't have any religious beliefs as such, but I find most Christians are hypocrites. Following the faith on Sunday and only within the group. Get them away from the Church and you wouldn't know they were Christian.
The Bible is a history book originally. It was put together from a range of writings that supported a certain direction in the Church of the time. There are many writings that weren't included as they either weren't relevent or they didn't support the teachings of the Church. The major religions followed the teachings of different deciples as they went about preaching their own version of events. Over time, it was indeed the interpretation of Church elders that pushed a religious branch in a certain direction. All religions follow the same basic idea that there is one supreme being that is the Creator, and by living the pure life will get you into paradise. This was the Church's best weapon to enlist followers, the fear of death and the unknown. By preaching that there was life after death in what ever Heaven they were pushing ensured the people adhered to the teachings of the Church.
Everyone is entitled to their own faith and beliefs, the Church teaches people to go and spread the word, as annoying as it is, they are only doing what they believe in. It's the extremists that use religion to to justify their actions that are the problem.
NAAF, Being a satanist has nothing to do with God. For all you know, its only called Satanism on the basis that the vengeful actions suggested by it are not stereotypically the sort of thing suggested by God, but by Satan.
Also, your description of religion only fits monotheistic religions. Does not suit deisms or polytheisms, nor does it fit Buddhism or LaVeyan Satanism.
