You gotta feel for this guy:
New Zealand truckie falls onto compressed air nozzle
Any others that people have seen/heard of?
Is it bad while reading this article I pictured the guy looking like the blueberry chick from Willy Wonka? I actually chuckled
I have no link to any article. Years ago however on our farm was a pretty bad accident. Deadhead Laborer was dropping seed in the tractor. Got a blockage. Instead of walking around the back of the seeder to the tractor, the deadshit decided to reach over the moving PTO with long stick. His jacket caught on it and well, let's say he had a drumstick that was on the ground when I arrived.
Got him to the ambulance who met us halfway and he had his arm re-attached perfectly. Sadly it was deadheads like this that caused stupid amounts of expensive over safe items to be fitted to everything.

Looks like a part from Freddie Cruger'S head!
1580 degrees CELCIUS.
I worked as a furnace operator in a foundry (I am now the purchasing officer at the same foundry).
Third last mould of the night getting poured, everythings going fine (what happens next took *maybe* 2-3 seconds) - and then I notice an orange glow down near my leg, i look down everything looks within spec, I look back up and the I hear this all mighty 'hiss'
Mould had let go. The two halves of the mould separated and began pouring it's contents onto my leg (this was a 400kg mould mind you).
So now I'm on fire, and molten steel has run down my leg and begun to fill my boot (I was wearing smelting boots - designed to protect you from Molten steel if you stood on it - so as they are so resistant to heat they kept the steel contained and let it cook my foot)
So I begin to walk away (managed one step), then I hop away - with my near on 80kg right boot.
The boys patted out the flames and spent the next 20-30 seconds removing my boot (I swear it was the longest time of my life). Having seen what molten steel does to people I was adament that my foot was no longer attached to my body. However it was - and boy did it stink.
And strangely it was rock solid and as white a roast chicken.
After that I was tranported to hospital, flown down to the Alfred immediately, and spent the next 3 months of my life there.
In total I had 3x FULL campaigns of skin grafts (as the first two sets didn't take at all), and went under more than 25 times in theatre.
Injuries/outcome was:
3rd degree FULL THICKNESS (cooked right through - not just surface damage) burns to the lower right leg and foot
3rd degree burns to the upper right leg
Removal of 90% of the tendons, blood vessels and nerve ending in my foot.
I walk with a crazy arse limp - because when they removed my boot they pulled it off at an angle and as the bone (yes, the bone) cooled it *set* crooked - a near on 90 degree angle from where the foot should be
I have a busted knee and hip from walking funny (both which require a reconstruction in the near future)
I suffer back pain 24/7
I will, without a doubt lose the leg within the next 10 years, as it simply can no longer maintain itself
And to top it all of I turn 27 next month!
'tis a great start to life I reckon.
^^^^ The worst part? This all happened because somebody wanted to knock off early on a Friday - and rushed to make the mould. Completely forgetting to put lock-in bars and mould locks in the mould (which collapsed 3-5 seconds after the run-out, along with the 600kg's of weights holding it down, right where I was standing).
Sucks, but at least nobody was killed.

I have been told fuel/liquid burns can be quite messy/ugly. They're right, lol. That ones a corker!
These are pretty much the only other ones I have.
These were taken by myself a few days after the doctors had removed the second set of skin grafts. Still pretty raw. (You can kind of see how the tops of my toes are dieing - I had the one beside the big-toe removed as it turned necrotic/dead)

Ouch...those are some serious burns. And a seriously ####ed up story. Sucks when other people's idiocy has such a major effect on your life.

I can still drive my manual XR6t - and that's the main thing. (It's awesome btw - will lay rubber in the first three gears by just rolling into the throttle - and that's on 275's!).
the burns posted by sabbath look like 2nd degree partial/full thickness burns where not all the tissue has been burnt, with some necrosis. 2nd degree burns can usualy heal with high risk of scarring. 3rd degree burns are where all of the skin has been burnt (destroyed) through the dermis down to the fatty layer, in some situations skin grafts are possible but full recovery is impossible.
I was under the impression that "full thickness" referred to the entire depth of the limb, and not the circumference? Not saying his burns aren't bad - as every burn is bad/worst pain possible - but it does not appear to be "full thickness".
I do however agree that full recovery from 3rd degree burns is impossible.
man .. im feeling sick, lol .. Burned myself with a soldering iron the other day .. Guess i shouldn't really complain should i?![]()
its a shame to hear of your accident caused by other people, i do hope it all goes well for you and you recover
havent really had anything serious, but
had 3 2 by 4's fall on me the other day, split the ol noggin open, no stitches though.
oh and got zapped by 500v as a megger was being used on somewhere different, still hurt.
i did this a while back on the impala. went right through my nail and everythin'
not gonna start a pissing war with you lot, but im pretty sure i win.
Surprisingly a full thickness burn requires only the involvement of epidermis (outer layer of skin), dermis and the fatty layer below. Once the whole layer of the dermis (inner layer) is destroyed the ability of the skin to heal itself is destroyed, hence the term 'full thickness'.< all of your burns are full thickness regardless of penetration past that point, you are right in saying his burns aren't as bad, to me those ones look like 2nd degree partial thickness/deep partial thickness (that’s what I should have said in my post above). the blistering indicates that there is living dermal tissue underneath, in your case there was no blistering because all the tissue had been burnt though.
My sympathies, i hope the person who ####ed it up knows and has what that did to you weighing on his conscience.

Hope you fellas got some compo. Not saying money will make your foot grow back neet_wagon, but seriously mate I hope you didnt get shafted in the workcover process
Yeah good luck with that!
Nearly three years ago this happened. Finally START the court battle after September this year. MIGHT be all finished by March next year.
Doesn't sound like an AWEFUL long time to wait - but I know have three kids, and before the accident I earned $90,000 p.a (take home), I now earn $36,000 p.a (take home)
The majority of any money I see will be from loss of earnings - there will be sweet F-A money for pain/suffering/compo
As for the guy that stuffed up, he was sacked shortly afterwards - they re-hired him last month (only this time he's doing my old job........................................)
There is that, yes.
But, I couldn't imagine what I went through happening to anybody else, not even him.
The hardest part of all this is being a former state champion soccer player (I played for 12 years), and having to sit on the sidelines and watch my son teach himself how to play the game, each & every Saturday.
Compensation will never come close to covering that.
Still, I think Ari's fingernail is still winning!
Wow. That stuff looks bad. It is bad.
Workplaces can be dangerous huh?
