Does anyone know the laws about this? My neighbours seem to breed a fair few cats, they just run wild and we get a fair few come snooping in our yard. I have a fox terrior and a ridgeback x staffy, both chase our own 2 cats but only seem to play. They've never bitten them.
Our neighbours cats come into our yard often, and if my dogs see them they bolt for them, but 99% of the time the cat jumps back over the fence b4 the dogs get close. A few months back they got one but didn't kill it, but it seemed to have a broken leg or sumfin. I put it back over the fence and that was that.
However 2night I heard them goin off pretty bad, and heard a cat as well....went to check and well this time the cat was too slow.
Wat are the laws in SA with this? If my neighbours find out and call the cops or RSPCA or whoever and report it, am I in the wrong coz my dog killed their cat, or is it their own fault coz their cat come onto our property?

our Germana Shepard killed 3 cats now here in QLD, and it was fine as the cats came into our yard and dog is registered to our address
A mates 2 dogs killed one of those little yappy dogs after it got into his yard and he had to get rid of his dogs, which I don't agree with.
This was in NSW.
Stupid damn cats.
my dog has killed 1 over the years that ive had her and the exact same thing, cat came into my yard, my dog got it, killed it.
I took it to the neighbors n apologised, they called the council. council investigated n found that there was no wrong doing on my behalf or my dogs, neighbors got told to keep a better watch on their cat.
funny my neighbor doesnt talk to me anymore but im cool with that, they were dicks :P
Their cat would still be alive if they did the right thing and stopped it roaming around! Should the cat owners lose their cats when they kill birds on other peoples property? I think you would be hard done by if you get into trouble but if you did I would turn it around and ask for action against your neighbors for all the stress they have caused you from their cats wandering uninvited into your yard.
Be very careful about telling anyone about this. I'd just make the cat disappear.
Lets hope ace ventura doesn't have a JC account![]()
my girlfriends cat killed a dog once... wat happens then lol
Our Rottiweiler got to a cat once. The result was... "messy".
I returned the cat to the owners in a plastic bag.
Wasn't an issue for us as the cat was our back yard. Plus in our area cats are supposed to be indoors 24/7 so yeah.
Wouldn't sweat it mate.
the cat came onto your property, you are not liable as long as your dog/s are registered. if they are not you will be fined $280 if the council get involved and it MAY make you liable.
you can always ring the council anonymously with a hypathetical question.
Nobody wants to play with me
I was at work once when my Labourers phone rang with the local ranger on the on the other end. His Bull Terrier got loose and killed 10 chickens 1 kitten and mauled 2 yap yap dogs.
I told him to put it down before it gets a stray child but it still lives. He was fined and the dog is now registered as a dangerous dog. It was up to the owners of the attacked pets to have him charged then subsequently finned but he spoke to the owners and said that he would pay them compensation to them up to the amount of the fine the ranger was going to give him. That way at least the owners of the pets got something. But if a cat or a dog was to wonder into the yard of a dangerous dog then even blind Ferdie can see that its not an offense if the dog registered at that address comes out on top.
Happened to us. Border Collie pwned the neighbours cat real bad. All of the white fur on his chest was red. Damn he looked freaky. Cat expired before we got downstairs and into the backyard to break it up.
Bag the cat and get rid of it.
Neighbour will be none the wiser and will think the cat just wandered off, unless they heard the noise.
Edit - if you are sure nothing is going to happen to your dog, you could tell the neighbour about it. Hopefully they might do something about their cats to prevent their stocks from dwindling.
We have two cats who live inside 24/7 unless we let them in the backyard for a while whist we are out there. I know where my cat is all the time so it is the owners of the cats who should be to blame. Most of the time the poor dog is just doing its job and protecting its property. My border collie was the same before she passed and we got our cats..... But you should inform your neighbour if you know it is there cat or dog as i would rather know than think it is dying of starvation somewhere....

To the people saying just hide it. Grow a brain just because the cat is outside doesn't mean the owner doesn't care for it. Would you like it if one of your pets was killed and some one hid the fact from you. Better to let them know what happened. Don't see you getting in trouble for it if it was your yard.

Im with Wraith, let the owners know. Its not your fault as the dog was only doing what it know protecting your yard, But if you go and bury it and someone finds out that could be really.... messy.
Thx for the advise guys. No one's been here asking about it so I guess we're all good.

a mate in the nth new england nsw reigon had the same happen to him. his dog killed an animal that got into the yard (i forget what kind) and the ranger wanted it destroyed no matter what. my mate tried hiding his dog on a property out of town but unless the ranger saw paperwork from the vet saying the dog had been destroyed he was going to hit my mate with every possible charge/fine.
the dog was my mates best friend/grew up with him etc etc so he was devastated, the animal lovers here will know exactly what im talking about. so if something similar happens to anyone in nsw i suggest hiding the evidence, keeping your mouth shut and acting like nothing ever happened.
So your pet who you love kills some one else's pet who they probably love so it's ok to hide it err ok.
