what are the rules of a roundabout?
the law clearly states to give way to any vehicle on the roundabout.
why do so many people sit there and let every vehicle coming from the right (e.g. vehicle has not entered the roundabout when YOU could have, and they should have given way to you) go through before they enter?
Nobody wants to play with me
If it's safe to enter the roundabout then do so, if not, don't.
As I said in the other thread, any traffic that you will have to give way to is going to be coming from the right, hence give way to your right.
I mean, really, it's not rocket surgery...
In theory, if you enter the roundabout first, you have priority. To be classified as having entered, you would need to have crossed the dotted line ahead of the vehicle on your right, but as we all know, if you are attempting to enter a roundabout from a side street and there is a continuous flow of traffic from your right, you've got Buckley's chance of getting your priority acknowledged.
Common sense and patience are all you can use. Australians have absolutely no idea of roundabout protocols or courtesy and for the most part, don't give a damn either. We really are an ignorant bunch.
I think the rule is you just barrel straight through keeping your eyes straight ahead at all times without stopping and definitely never check for other cars on your right, or left for that matter.
At least thats how they do it around where i live, BMW drivers and young girls in particular.
im with hangman. its natural to look to your right when coming up to a round about to see if its clear to go or not, regardless of the road rules. its just easier that way. i dont see anyone sitting there watching other cars sitting there saying "no you go". "after you sir you were here first" "was i?" "i thought you were". or you do what 50% of people do and just pull out on you looking straight at you thinking "ohhhhh is he gonnna hit me???!!!"

lol no idea why, but this thread made me think about the facebook group;http://www.facebook.com/pages/Turnin...64637470269804 haha,
i just giveway to everyone cos im a top ####ing bloke.
My street exits onto a four lane main road with a through speed limit of 70kph. That includes the dual lane roundabout. Vision to your right is restricted by a decorative wall. Enter that roundabout without stopping first at your own risk.
Actually, I've often thought about posting pics of this roundabout on the forum and starting a thread about dangerous roundabouts. Might get onto that this week.
i'd like to see this roundaboutit sounds ridiculous!

Things that annoy me thats should be done are : ####ing indicate!!! i dont ####ing know where you going if you dont tell me. If i pull thinking your going straight then you suddenly start turning right you are a full blown ########
Things you shouldnt do is stop for no ####ing reason if there no cars dont ####ing stop, its not a stop sign

Well let me introduce you to Adelaide's own roundabout of death. Try navigating this in peak hour traffic.

My biggest beef with roundabouts is when, coming up to a 2 lane roundabout (that exits on all sides with 2 lanes), people stop infront of me, and never use the outside lane :/ Even if they are going straight, they always give way to people on the inside lane of the roundabout. Me? I just go on the outside lane and pass everyone. But yeah with big vehicles, I give them ample room as they usually cross over lanes a bit when going over small roundabouts or tight ones

Thankyou. I thought I was alone!! Why is it so hard? My most amazing experience came many years ago in Darwin where I approached a roundabout that a car had already entered to my left. I went to enter it as the car was on its way around. You can imagine my surprise when it stopped and reversed back off. Serious. It was a guy around 60. He could not possibly have been doing this all his driving life. But almost each day I bury my face in my palms as people demonstrate their inabilty to navigate these apparently unfathomable puzzles.
That’s it but you do need to be a little assertive. Most of time someone will present to the right of the traffic already entering. It is at that time the person who is to the left of the newly stopped traffic should take the opportunity to join the procession. It works if everyone is on the ball.
What's everyones take on indicating on/off round abouts? I only indicate if I am going right or left (I do so before I get on the roundabout), but if I am going straight ahead, I indicate left when i'm about halfway onto the roundabout, I hate it when people do the whole indicate right, then left, then leave the roundabout

There's a roundabout a few k's from me where the main road actually exits from the roundabout at a different angle to its entry, and in between the entry and exit is a side street that is closer to the straight ahead drive. (ie enter at 6 o'clock, side street between 11 and 12 and main exit at 1 o'clock. When you put your left indicator on to exit, idiots in the side street assume you are turning into their street and enter the roundabout without waiting for you to pass. Wonderful design, that!)
When we are done talking about roundabouts let's move on to 4 way stop signs. Now THATS a full blown disaster. Makes the drive to work rather interesting. Stab the brakes then boot it before the other bloke stops. Bahaha
Down here (inner melbourne, ie vic market) there are round abouts with trams going through the middle of them. Must give way to the tram, then normal round about rules apply. Seems pretty simple, but I see at least 3 near misses a day, and that's only what I see!
I indicate if I'm turning, but not if I'm going straight. If other drivers can't work out that no indicator means I'm going straight, well...
The only time I indicate left when leaving a roundabout is if I'm turning right in the right lane and the left lane can continue going around past where I'm exiting. If you get what I mean![]()
