Gday guys,
Im not sure if this has been discussed already, if so then disregard this.
Im sure everyones aware of the no performance modifications for P platers crap here in NSW, but a mate just bought something to my attention.
The RTA website (P Plate conditions page) mentions "Prohibited vehicles are those with: Engine performance modifications that require an engineers' certificate."
Im sure it used to say something along the lines of no modifications to increase the performance of the engine. Can anyone confirm this? Also, I'm interested if anyone can shed some light on what sort of performance mods need a engineers cert?
Is this just a different way of saying no performance mods, therefore nothings changed?
Im interested to hear what others may think
Vehicle and passenger conditions for P1 and P2 licence holders
Wouldn't suprise me if they just changed what needs an engineers certificate rather than the actual law![]()

lol ive been using that little loop hole for a while now... as long as you can prove that your upgrades are reasonable and safe you can do your own "engineering certificate"... so upgrade the brakes and you can add some power
thats how i see it anyway and as long as it isnt a blower or a cam it should be ok
That is not how it works. Changing brakes would most likely need an engineers certificate unless the car was optioned with them. Even rims bigger than the ones on your tyre placard should (if you're pedantic) require an engineers certificate. It's not just a matter of you deciding that your brake upgrade counterbalances your exhaust, tune, or whatever you've done.
actually that does sound like its changed, because i was looking on the rta site like a few weeks ago looking for the thing that says any mods on p plates are illigal because my friend didnt believe me, but now it says something about not haveing mods unless you have an engineer certificate, so mabey it has changed, thats probly why p plater mods are banned, not because they make the cars faster but people are doing things dodgy which make there cars more dangerous, but with a certificate it might prove things are legit..
well ive read all the stuff on the rta website about it and each time thats what it appeared to be saying to me... and i didnt change the size of the brakes just the quality so i dont see how that would need an engineering certificate as it falls under the self engineering partThat is not how it works. Pffft. I just change what I want within reason.
If you can't notice from the outside of the vehicle without being a mechanic, I'de say you'll be alright.
On the other hand, if you put "fully sick exhaust bro" and pump the double kicker subs, then Mr. Policeman is sure to take issue with your car.
too true... stock stereo and reasonably quiet exhaust is how i roll lolIf you can't notice from the outside of the vehicle without being a mechanic, I'de say you'll be alright.
