Hey guys,
Just wondering how many , if any of you guys do FIFO (fly in, fly out) work?
I currently slave away up at challenger gold mine near Glendambo, although hopefully not for much longer....the 6 figure salary would be good if i didnt pay so much in tax....hopefully i can get a job back in Radelaide soon...more time for me and my SS to get to know each other![]()
ummm half of WA. my dad just quit his job to work FIFO.
No chance dude. Not a big fan of flying although have to do it sometimes with work, I just found a local job that pays the same as the mines! Like Mr T...

my missus's dad actually does 6 days on 8 days off. wtf is with that haha.
its not as good as everyone makes it out to be.....i am a sparky up here and honestly im only earning maybe 3-400 more a week up here but you gotta go through the bullshit.....and if ya have had enough its not like you can jump in your car and leave...gotta wait for a spot on the plane,
your either working, at the bar or sleeping absolutly nothing else to do
If i was able to get a job at the mines i would be there at the drop of a hat, as long as i was able to get away from victoria for a bit id be happy but no go so far
my dad doesnt have one so not sure what happens there, they are pretty strict with drug testing though so depends on what the conviction would be.
but all my mates work up there, my missus has a job lined up too, cant be too hard to get one haha, i probably should have done in, cant have too much money.
yeah true mine aint for drugs at all so thats a bonus mine was for associated theft
well put it this way, we had a guy rock up here pending his police clearance.....he landed on site, we got the police clearance back saying he had been done for breaking and entering....litterally turned him around put him back on the plane
so really its upto your employer, depending on what your mining...(we mine gold here at challenger) you have to do a GSDU which is a gold stealing detction unit check....a bit more intense then a standard police check so i wouldnt think you would be able to get on site with associated theft on your record...sorry mate
im pretty sure iron ore and copper mines are different though, wouldnt know for sure as i have only worked on gold mines.
And its not that easy getting a job in the industry if you dont have experience....unless its a lower job like driving trucks or something
that plays a big part of it aswell.....i have gotten numerous people on site jobs here, try getting into the industry of your own back and see how ya go....i have never had anything handed to me, i have worked my ass off, being ripped off, my own parents stole 18G off me whilst i was in Iraq....getting shot at doing non-compliant boardings on suspicious boats in the gulf, had "mates" steal from me, and pretty much been screwed over in everyway you can think of....
and ya know where im at now, im one hardcore mutha fvckathinking about getting a lil tear tattoo im that hardcore
but seriously who is going to hire someone for a job in a heavy inudstry with no experience....mines dont have time to train personnel, they need them ASAP, if ya can get into it go for it but its a different world depending on what mine you work at
azzaholic.. i've been working in coal mines on the east coast for the last 3.5 yrs and never had any hassles with police checks etc (not that anything would come up anyway) quite a few of the lads i've worked with had a few court appearances/charges to their name and had no dramas because of it
Mining in WA is all about experience and who you know.
If you dont have a foot in the door with either then good bloody luck.
As for it Im not allowed on most sites due to the extensive list of injuries and amounts of metal I have in me nowadays :P
Id rather just chill out in the city and work/live a normal life.
But if you can put up with the time anyway with 12 hour days then nothing to do afterwards then go for gold, my best mate is up at gorgon as a general laborour making a killing, but hes doing 27 on 9 off.
Steev would like to work in the mines, somebody should definitely hand me a job on on a silver platter.
LOL at the "lower job". Yeah that's offensive, my father and BF are both truckies, my BF for example only works doing Perth metro and cracks $110k, so go wash your mouth out.
It has nothing to do with who you know either, I know a number of "higher up" guys at Wetrac and Rio Tinto, they cant do shit these days, it's all gotta go through recruitment agencies (Although Pilbarra Iron aren't so bad). My BF has been driving for years, has all of his fuel passports, DG's, fatigue management and worked driving interstate for years and as I said, we know plenty of people. It's more a matter of getting in there, once your in, your set forever.
As for the criminal record, some will ignore it, depending on the finer details (when, why, how etc).
i didnt mean to offend ya, there are obviously "lower" jobs....im a powerstation operator with qualifications in mechanical engineering and electrical engineering....its not a job that a truck driver can do...BUT..in saying that i now how hard any job is when its remote and especially truck drivers...i was more referring to the big mining truck drivers as they just go back and forwards all day with rock/ore travelling at 9km...we are good mates with all the fuel drivers and explosive drivers and they are all top blokes...its a hard demmanding job and requires more time away from home then my job, so im heaps sorry if i did offend you...
but in saying that im on 160k a year.....thats the difference
processing guys and operators are on about 90-110 a year and most of them have no quals what so ever.
Yes most jobs are found through recruitment agencies however the companys have to pay a higher wage to the agency then if they hired directly so sometimes in certain circumstances knowing people does help and yes once your in...your in
Criminal records do matter too....your not gonna get a job at a gold mine with any theft charges against you...and thats coming from the mining manager himself
As long as your sorry thats all the matters! I grew up without my father because he worked so much (interstate & FIFO) and same deal with the BF, he's always away working, working extremely long hours.
=o) a good friend of mine has a criminal record the length of Santa's naughty list... He works for Argyle Diamonds. It is possible.
