Default Melbourne Council Wants 30kmph Speed Limit

SPEED limits may be slashed to just 30km/h in residential streets and parts of the city centre.

City councils pushing the radical plan believe it would significantly reduce accidents.

The City of Melbourne is consulting road safety groups and the community on the move.

Yarra Council also wants clearways banned in suburbs like Collingwood, Richmond and Fitzroy.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle told the Herald Sun yesterday that the CBD had the highest number of road crashes in the state and cutting the speed limit in some of the smaller streets and lanes was a serious option.

"What you'll find there is you are crossing a major intersection and pedestrians will just completely ignore the lights," he said.

"The difference in time of travelling between 40km/h and 30km/h through the city would be minuscule, but the big differential is the ability to react and brake if there is a problem."

What a ####ing joke. Instead of punishing drivers for the stupidity of pedestrians, increase the speed limit and lets get rid of the morons.

Na walking would be too fast, you would run the risk of bumping into somebody!!

Might aswell just get out and push the car around the streets.

it wont reduce any speeds, all it will achieve is additional speed cameras and additional revenue.

and isnt that what everything in vic is geared around?

man, getting to my work is gonna hurt. chaddy to richmond@30kmph will easily take over an hour now.

Wow, your lucky to be able to even drive that fast in the city, In syd the limit is 50 but you barely get above 20

Cant understand this mentality of continually slowing cars down.

We could all drive at 0kph and it would be very very safe, but it sorta defeats the purpose of driving a car in the first place

The next logical spet being that the speed limit in the city will be lowered to 0kmph.

Seriously, I know the lanes this is focused at and the reason for pedestrians being hit is their own stupidity.

So often people jsut step out onto the road without even looking.

I actually had a woman abuse me once because she saw be crossing the road and crossed herself without looking.

The only difference was that I knew I was crossing on a red and hurried across to make it before the 4wd arrived at my location. The same 4wd that almost cleaned her up because she stepped out RIGHT infront of it.

Then she abused ME for crossing because she though that since I was crossing it was a green light. WTF?

But yeah, 60kmph, 50kmph, 30kmph, 20kmph, doesn't matter what speed you are doing, when you have some muppet with headphones in, tight pants and a stupid haircut step out 1 foot infront of your bonnet you are going to clean them up.

maybe people should stop looking at their phones etc, look up and see what is going on around them.
maybe people could use some common sense, and actually put their brains to work as to whether something is safe or not.
maybe people should take care of their own safety, and safety of their kids (instead of letting them run around after they have had too many red lollies) when around roads.

if i have to be slowed down any more on my way to work because of the stupidity of others (government aswell) i am going to scream.
they have already completely ruined the flow of traffic with 80kph freeways (monash, calder, tulla). when 100+ would be perfectly fine in other countries for this standard.

i can see where they are coming from but seriously, a road is for cars/vehicles/bikes etc not for pedestrians. its what the footpath (keyword, foot) was designed for!
how about we make the pedals out of sticky rubber and the shoes with steel spikes. at least my shins would like that

what a load of shit, these speed limits are a complete joke!! i get confused now between 40 50 60 70 80 90 100 110, we even have the F3 with a section that says 100kph but when rain 90kph, you know what, they can f...off, whats going to happen when the population hits 30 to 40million, go back to horse and carrige, where do they get these f...ked up ideas from, cause i travel a lot to different countries and i havent see this variance in speed limits anywhere else.

Yeah? Well in SA we have 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70,80,90,100 and 110 speed zones. And halfwits will tell you that if you don’t want to get fined don’t speed. It would be ok if you knew what speed limit the 30 meters of road you were travelling on was.
30 ks is a natural progression for all governments who use road safety as an excuse to extort money from motorists.

thats true, half the time in the burbs not sure on the speed limit so i stick to 65 but in reality that could be 15 over, if its a 50 zone, or on the flip side, i could be pissing people off that are behind me cause in reality its a 70 zone.

the M40 is a giant fwy that circles london. im pretty sure its been hailed as the busiest road in europe. 70 MILES per hour (112kmph). only slows down for roadworks. all freeways in england are 70 MPH. the national speed limit is 60MPH (96kmph) this covers ALL ROADS THAT HAVE MORE THAN ONE LANE. then you go to the city where its 50MPH or 30MPH.

everything is well thought out, all traffic flows 'kinda' freely they have a death toll, but no worse than ours if you consider the population differences.

they just dont make as much money as vic does for "speeding offenders"

Meanwhile now that N.S.W gov is now liberal, we have gotten rid of 1/4 of speed cameras and are increasing speed limits on certain roads.

    Now whos the backwards state!

I agree with the 40km/h school zones (having kids at school does that), but not 30km/h to protect the city muppets who are too busy texting to look where they're going.
