A 10-year jail sentence for sexting? You can't be srs! | Information, Gadgets, Mobile Phones News & Reviews | News.com.au
Am I the only one who finds it strange that if a person decides to send a nude photo of themselves they can be charged and put on the sex offenders list?
How have we let such draconian people place these laws upon us??

I remember hearing about some high school kid that was charged and put on the sex offenders list for it.
Utter government stupidity.
'Sexting' youths placed on sex offenders register
want to get someone arrested, simply send them a pic of yourself naked (if you are under 18)
Thats ridiculous!
I can understand how they can class it this way, if you're under 18 and take a picture of yourself naked and send it out, it is production and distribution of child pornography,. but they have gone too far with it..
Lets just hope its a one off to try to scare people away from doing it, and not a punishment that will be used time and time again..
lol too far? These people are "mature" enough to own a phone as deemed by their parents and as such are mature enough to make informed decisions on what they do, if they decide without force to send naked pictures of themselves then it should not be any crime except for if the receiver is years older and then the receiver can be charged. The sender should never be guilty of anything...

Great so if some underage chicky babe is like hey check this out and sends me a pic then it gets lost with all my other messages I could get locked up if it is found. Wicked....not.

Welcome to the internet where people have opinions that you might not like
Yeah I meant underage.

Yeah this is stupid... if two horny 16yo's want to run around sending each other dirty pictures, then that's their business.
Makes a mockery of real victims. It could get to the point where its so common that people don't think twice about registered sex offenders, they will just say oh I just sent some silly naked pics of myself when I was a teen and no one will know who the bad guys are when you lump people like this in the same category as kiddy fiddlers.
another case of government and lawmakers not able to keep up with emerging technology. And the inability of the real problem to be effectively policed. So as with all such cases they take the easy way out for themselves and use overkill.
A few years ago my brother sent me a picture of his 16y.o missus with her puppies out. I went nuts at him for the reasons outlined here, that its illegal, can get in huge trouble, shes underage, ive got a missus etc... so dont ever do it again.
If I'm honest tho, my main concern is she was fugly and my eyes suffered temporary but very painful damage similar to what you get welding without a mask
The thing is though, what needs policing? How is a girl sending a guy a pic of her topless any different to her doing it in person? The country has become packed full of wowsers where everyone is a kiddy fiddler. Heck I get enough snarky comments down at the beach doing landscape shots, god help me if I am doing a kids shoot in public.

this was on tv the other night.
found it funny that if you yourself take the photo of YOURSELF and distribute it, you can be charged with producing and distributing child pornography.
no joke either
So if an underage girl accidentally typed in the wrong number and sent a naked picture of herself to you, and you deleted it, you should be charged?
What a load of crap.
The only way you should be charged is if you didn't delete it, or sent it to someone else before deleting it.
It's so sad these days that you can't just get out there with your camera and take action shots for instance of kids at the skateboard park or similar. I wanted to do something like this purely for practice. I ended up taking shots at an amateur footy game rather than have someone call the cops or abuse me.
My Father for many years (he is 74 now) loved to take random shots of people without them knowing, he loves the natural non posed shots. He has some fantastic photos of people from all ages and walks of life, including a black and white favourite of mine, a young boy about 6 sitting in a doorway in France. If my Father took that pic today he would probably be arrested.
Same Crap, Different Day.... Nuff Said!
If it's not a Symptom its not relevant, and if its not relevant I don't care!
Unfortunately the least of your worries. The providers have to hold records of all messages for seven years. If someone does research into who you called, what you texted, what photos or videos you sent, the records are there. These are permanent, not deletable.
I can understand the reasoning behind this and I support it to an extent. In the event that you receive something by accident, send a message back stating not to do it again and that it has been deleted.
You don't send stuff by accident (ask Brendan Fevola) so there's no defense to that one.

What happens if I get my 16 year old mate to send a picture of his willy to Julia Gillard?
