Here: Top Gear Australia hosts say raise speed limits | Herald Sun vote yes. I can't see it making a huge difference but it's worth a try

Yes from me! Hopefully it catches on.
It should be in fact 150.........if and when governments can get their heads around sorting the wheat from the chaff on our roads.
Drivers dribbling along in outside lanes well below set limits, and drivers continually changing lanes MUST be pulled over and fined very high amounts, or worse......licence suspension.
Take a trip to Europe, or do some long distance driving in the U.S.A. on their sensational roadways........both east and west side........outside line will see you do 100 miles in an hour.
I think 130km/h is still conservative, but reasonable. I've dont some fair interstate driving up both the east and west coasts and Melbourne to Adelaide a fair few times and it just about puts you to sleep putting along at 110kph hour after hour. If we could go 20-30kph faster it would require more driver attention and cut down on travel time and fatigue.
How good would melbourne to adelaide in 5 hours be! It will never happen in the nanny state tho
Its never going to happen, but a man can dream. Either way I voted yes.![]()

Would be nice. But we're in Victoria, nanny state of Nanny country. This will never happen.
I'm surprised that freeway speed limits haven't already been reduced to 80kmph because this would be "safer".
This can NOT happen until there is PROPER driver education in Australia.
You cannot compare German roads and Australian roads without taking into account the far superior driver education and licencing systems in Europe.
in QLD before and after gympie, smack bang in the 110 zone there is a 90 zone for about 40km's and it takes like an hour to get through it. its friggen gay

That, in addition to the fact that Europeans are required by law to keep their cars in tip top condition, hence why most of them drive newish cars. I see old shitters getting around Bundaberg that would be scary enough to drive at 100 km/h, let alone at 130+. (keep in mind that we have no mandatory annual inspections here in QLD, you can pretty much let your car go as far as you want until you get pulled up and defected)

Would fail in Victoria. People cannot even keep left when not over taking. The amount of times you have to under take a car doing 90 on a freeway because they do not keep left is ridiculous.

Bring back open limits for the NT.
Take it easy...But do take it...
Do not argue with an IDIOT.
He will just drag you down to his level an beat you with experience.
Some people take me the wrong way, Like smacking up Marijunna.
Would be good in NSW, but with slower people in the outside lane might be a problem, though I voted yes.
I just read further to my comment about traveling 100 miles in the hour in the U.S.A., that the often posted limit is 75mph, but up to 15mph faster is ignored by the law. Absolutely YES.
You will find on 3 and 4 lane highways vehicles traveling at various speeds staying in their lane at whatever speed is comfortable for them. In the far outside line.......on the left of course.......all sorts of vehicles including large trucks etc. are moving at well over the posted limit without any problem whatsoever.
In my several times for months at a time I found the U.S.A. to be a very pleasant place to drive, and never once saw any sort of crash. People just know what they are about, mostly unlike here in Australia, in particular Queensland. I have never in all my years seen worse roads or worse drivers that have just no idea, or don't wish to have any idea.
It will never change though. It's ingrained into them from birth I'm afraid.
probably not going to happen, unless someone goes around bitch slapping everyone that disagrees, you could also give julia gillard one while your there... so far theres only 580 people that say no, there probably mums with 4x4 or old people, so someone should really start! lol
i say a big friggen yes, as a matter of fact il take any increase even 5ks any increse is better than the current bs, as far as roads are concerned, we have some good ones that im sure would easily handle those limits. the problem at the moment on the freeways is that everyone is affraid of the fuzz, thats why the 2 or 3 lanes are stagnet or blocked people are scared to go over by a couple of ks, in europe the overtaking is staggered on highways because the slow stay in the far right, the medium speed stay in the middle and the left is high speed, so there is never an incident where some dick will hog the overtaking lane.......but should it happen the high beem starts flashing a good 50 mtrs away and you know you better get the f#$%^&&* out of the way!
I see your Victoria and raise you a South Australia. Seriously I think we take that crown hands down. No government would ever approve that idea because for two reasons.
1. It would affect revenue which after all is the biggest imperative in road safety.
And
2. It would immediately fly in the face of all the “knock off 5” and “creeper” ads that try to convince us that it is a few kph’s that make all the difference.
Yes, I've driven in Europe also, and as said people just stay in their lanes.
Many many years ago my Wife and I with two Aussie friends had a VW Kombi that we travelled all over Europe. It did exactly 130 kilometers per hour flat out by the speedometer, so on Autobahn/Autostrada etc. we just stayed at that speed on the very inside lane not causing a problem to anyone. We did see Maserati's etc. probably traveling on the outside lane with lights blazing at 200+ MPH.
Another time we were in the old Yugoslavia, where to be honest the roads are not good, but people in particularly on GP type motorcycles were flat out sounding sensational but causing no grief. So what's wrong in Australia?
I have my views what the problem is, but our governments would not listen or do anything about it.
Seriously... The monash is 80ks from Bourke road....60 in parts and you think the govt will raise limits?
All for it...will never happen.
People ticked no because they don't feel safe traveling at those speeds...hmmm maybe they should stick to publi transport then?
I find this funny, don't they have 130kmh limits in the Northern Territory?"There is no road in Australia that is safe at speeds of greater than 110km/h," he said.
Couldn't agree more. My grandma never drives above 80 because she thinks its unsafe since it doesn't give you enough chance to stop if something goes wrong. I hate to say it, but that mentality is dangerous. If you can't control a good car on a straight road in good conditions at 120-130 then I believe you lack the skills required to hold a license
everyone should under go a defensive driver course anyway. i dont see why its not manditory, would save dozens of lives..
and i think people should get re-tested for ur liscens when u hit a cirtin age or ever couple of years... the amout of idiots still driving is stupid
people parked half on the road, in 2 carparks going like 70 on a free way
i was at the pedestrian crossing today and 1 old guy drove thru the red, a middle age bloke stoped and the old lady behind him tooted and signaled him to go on a red light..
obviously blind.
after all its not the speed killing people. its the stupid idiots that somehow get their license and cant controal their car when they crash
