so i am hooking up my brothers ute with some HID's and i need help to decide which ones (35w or 55w) would be more suitable for us.
the ute gets used at night about once every 2-3 weeks we go up north to a farm and use it at night in the bush/paddocks and on the way home is a 1 hour 30 min drive home we leave about 11midnight and we need the extra lighting for roo's and other animals on the side of the road that decide to run across and dont want to hit or wreck the ute so i thought why not get hid's. so it gets used on COUNTRY roads, never really in the city.
so i am tryen to decide on which ones to do, at the moment i have decided on 6000k.
just not sure on 55w or 35w.
any ideas? also is it really much difference??
everything was about commodores so i thought id post here
Why don't you save your self the hassle and get spotties?

Amen wraith
Spotties are easier, legal and shine a hell of a lot more light than HIDs ever would
but if u do go HID high beam 35w 6000k are extremely bright and cover heaps, honestly 55w are just a bit brighter is all and you should hook then difrectly to the battery
umm, its got 2 spotties already
Get HID's put in the spotties then. Keep it legal. Or spend 800 bucks on an LED lightbar which will give you more light then you can imagine.

You can get specialized HID spotlights from offroad shops. They arent cheap, but the lenses are correctly designed for HID and the light is freaking awesome. Not sure about the legalities though, I remember some H1 spotlights used to be illegal except for offroad use and had to have covers on them otherwise. These may fall in the same category, not sure.
What I do for customers is get a HID kit and retrofit them into the spotties. Is actually pretty easy and in some spotties theres enough room behind the lenses to put the ballasts. Have done this on the work vehicle and have yet to have a problem with over heating and what not.

ok thanks for that, i think i will get them for the spotties as i wanted them just for the high beams but then i found out the low beams and high beams are h4-2and so i just gotta find out what globes the spotties take, so 35w for spotties?
thanks
35W for spotties will be fine. What brand and model are the spotties?

yeahbut it will be brighter in the spotties right?
Maybe not brighter but the reflectors are designed differently and most importantly it's completely legal.

yeah the way it is setup is only when the high beams are on the spotties can go on, but it will be brighter on the side of the gravel road right?
i mean like so we can see the animals when they are about to cross, because its on a gravel road in the bush
also the spotties are located in the middle of both head lights on the roo bar

It really is and if you get luck you may even be able to hide the ballast behind the lense. I took some pictures to help you. The plug for power that goes into the ballest and the hid globe itself.

Ohh forgot to mention the globe is in it's plastic protector that's not what it looks like. Just rather not take the tape off a new kit :P

ok.. thanks for all the info,
so in the middle picture i need to wire up the + and the ground seperate (not to the original plug)
oh and one other thing, if the ballast did not fit behind the lense, where would you put it? like in the engine bay? are the wires long enough?
Most wires are fairly long. You could get away with cable ties on the radiator support. That red and black wire can go the positive and negative wires your spotties would have.
