So Im sitting watching this cop show 'RBT' - and my flatmate points out that the cop cars are all different colours. All various factory colours with stickers over them. Does anyone know why this is? Over here all our marked police cars are white.
Your standard cop car is white.
HWY Patrol cars are generally the only ones that are colored differently as well as unmarked cop cars (which are generally all dark blue or grey).
They have the different colours mainy for the re-sell value of the car because more people will buy a colored car over a white car.
It actually has a lot to do with resale values and demand for high performance second hand cars. HWP cars, being performance Commodores and Falcons, are in demand once they hit the used car market. Performance car buyers want strong and vivid colours that are normally available on the performance models - not boring white. It's also easier to get deliveries of vehicles taken from regular production runs, rather than having to order specific colours for police use.
HWP cars were all white in NSW years ago, but went over to regular colours because of this fact.
It's purely to stand out.

About the value, I agree on this as my dad's old company he worked for buy used Ex-Cop Toyota Aurions, and they are all white cos' they're cheaper.

Australian Police Departments can afford to tick the "Metallic" box on the order form.

So they did this for resale?

Talking to a cop at the summernats about the ACT cars with the fluro orange etc stripes, he said they started doing it to make them look more approachable in public. And it worked because we walked up and asked them about it.
But the main reason i've heard is resale aswell.
Need some parts for my VH 253:
Green standard steering wheel...Green lower B-pillar covers.
Green sunglasses holder/lower dash bits...Air-con and assorted engine bay parts.
PM with any info.
i read somewhere that these colours were chosen for the visibility factor... which of course contradicts the fact they try and hide most times to catch bad people speeding like meeeeee
I think its because they have the low profile light bar now they try and do a sneaky on ya because head on its very hard to tell they are police, we're a country founded by criminals don't ya know![]()

I don't know the exact answer to your question, and it sounds like not many others do either, but refering to the resale value reason , I think that is BS because why would the government give a sh!t about resale value when they are only leasing the cars? and they are not going to take coloured cars because the dealer or leasing company say we can sell them for more after you have thrashed them.
makes no sense to me.
Nobody wants to play with me
Considering your undercover cop car is any make or model now I don't think they would stick to a particular colour. Be more like whatever they have at the time will do.

our local HP officer drive a blue XR6T, can spot him a mile away. Doesnt help he stalks us P platers... So of course we all notice him! haha, but in saying that, when I got caught speeding it was a plain white VE commy and it was marked and I couldnt spot it until it was too late... :/ but most of the candy cars up here all started out as unmarked and then once word got out about them the got marked...
not sure about the other states, but in Qld the different colour cars represent different the different tasks the cars are assigned to.
there was a bit of a media release about it a few years ago, can't remember all the colour designations. But red was for highway patrol, and there was a colour for the RBT cars etc....
The weirdest looking cop cars I have ever seen belonged to the ACT... When I went to the Summer Nats one year I noticed a Pink HWP with a black and white checker banner up the side of it...
I gave him the thumbs up for a change![]()
Ummm, when did you see a fully marked ex police car for sale at an auction? All markings are stickers and can be removed for sale, as you would know.
At work, we had a HWP Commodore in Morpheus, which was fully marked with the NSW Police emblem, Police sign, lights, the full kit. It looked absolutely putrid in that bright purple with the large blue Police markings. Some colours work well with the marking. Morpheus certainly didn't.
And for those "know alls" who reckon resale is BS because governments don't care about cost, how about commenting on something you really have knowledge about instead of just spouting crap?
Government departments lease cars these days because it is cheaper to do so than to purchase them and suffer the depreciation. The condition of the cars when they are returned to the leasing company has a major bearing on the cost of the lease, because the leasing company wants the best return for their vehicles when they sell them. The police departments don't really care what colours their cars are, they just need to know that replacement cars are readily available as they are needed. The resale value is of great interest to the leasing company however, because they wand the maximum saleability for their cars once the lease has expired. I I know this for a fact, it's not just an opinion. Police vehicles have to be properly maintained to comply with the leasing contracts, again with potential resale values in mind. I can speak from personal experience over a number of years which is more than some on this thread can claim.
