trying to change national anthem...
Kids taught to sing alternative national anthem
"A life lived in fear is a life half lived"
Better our national anthem than our legal system...
Seriously, I would almost say 95% of the population do not even know the 2nd verse of the anthem.
Just another non story. I want to see some real journalism, like on why Gillard refuses to talk about her ex boyfriend the fraud and claims she was "young and naive" at 31. Now that would be worth discussing!!
"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."

What another religion trying to change Australia's Identity.
Whats new.
To minux just because some people dont know the Australian national anthem its no excuse to alter it. Learn the national
anthem. I think if you want to be an Australian citizen you have to know the national anthem.
I find that really rude and arrogant from the Christians schools.
Australias anthem is it's identity?
You had no problem with another religion wanting to change/use their legal system in another thread but a christian school singing their own version of a mostly unsung verse is abhorrent? LOL, nice try.
I suppose they could be like the certain school down the road where the Australian national anthem is not allowed to be sung.
As I said, it is a nothing story.

I don't really care about religion, so if some school wants to sing "Australians all love Jesus Christ, for we are his followers indeed" or some bullshit, let them, who cares? If everyone in the world was religious, and they all sung a different version of the national anthem, I for one wouldn't sing the "new" version, I myself don't really know the 2nd verse, but if I did I'd sing it.

Yeh lets just spit anything we want in our national anthem. That so rude.
Lets start respecting our country.
Instead of treating it like a used rag
i find it a bit of a joke. but hey each to their own. it will just confuse people when they get older and arent singing the same words as the rest are.
now lets put this towards politcally correct songs like baa baa black sheep... or is that a whole different kettle of fish."Alternative words should not be used and schools should be teaching students to sing the two authorised verses," Mr Garrett said
and no i did not learn the 2nd verse of the national anthem, although from memory the first line is "beneath our radiant southern cross"
went and found the 2nd verse for those interested
Beneath our radiant Southern Cross,
We'll toil with hearts and hands,
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands,
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share,
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia fair.
I remember standing for the pommie anthem at the movies as a kid... the Poms must be horrifed that we stopped that back in the 70's...
White 05 V6 VZ Executive - Thrashed Ex Telstra car
and 3 Dangerous non ABS VN's
australians all eat sausages for breakfast lunch and tea .... now thats an anthem
but on a serious note, let them sing there own friggen version, BUT if they sang that version at the footy, V8 supercars etc etc i would call for a riot![]()

I don't support changes to the anthem on a religious theme, but completely support dumping the dirge we call an anthem for something more contemporary and stirring. We went from the world's worst national anthem to the second worst when we dumped "God Save the Queen".
Even Noo Zelund has a far better anthem than us.
For the record, I write this from memory!
Beneath our radiant Southern Cross we'll toil with hearts and hands,
To make this Commonwealth of ours renowned of all the lands.
For those who've come across the seas we've boundless plains to share,
With courage let us all combine to advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing, Advance Australia fair.
Had to learn it AND sing it in my government primary schools - and I went to a few different ones.
I'm not a fan of our anthem at all.... I've gotta say the yankee national anthem puts us to shame in a big way.
Religious Private schools should be free to teach what they want though. If you don't like it, send your kids to a non religious school or a state school or something. I went to a state school so I learned most of the first verse and the first line of the second verse
And Our flags crap too
personally, I think all religions suck. As for the anthem..it won't matter what the anthem is, the greater population will not remember all the words. And the flag.. couldn't care less what it is, however i think the reference to britain is irrelevant.

Translated: I don't understand religion. I'm not proud of my country, my flag or my culture.
Religion is a broad and wide-ranging concept and to stereotype it, as with all things, is wrong. I do believe that all faiths should be given fair room to express themselves, however, the national anthem is a set-in-stone affair of which a country uses to identify itself. Whilst I would be all up for designing a new one (Because, admittedly, it IS a little bit wanky...) it is still OUR national anthem. When you hear it at the Olympics, or at the World Cup, it's the Aussie's in the crowd belting it out.
In short, the school has made a bad decision. They should be asked to amend their ways, return to singing the original anthem, and leave it at that. If they fail to comply, we should gather all fit men of age and go on a new crusade to reform the world to the glory of the trinity of the father, the son and the holy spirit....Jokes, just urge the government to grow a pair and force it.
Well you send your kids to a religious school you are gonna get that. I doubt it is really going to harm the kids given the rest of the religious education they will be subjected to. My kids went to a Catho school by order of the missus. They pretty much have made their own minds up on the whole issue.
As far as national anthem go I would be pretty happy to see them do just that.
I hate to say this, I really do but I agree with pravxI think it is pretty poor form of these schools to be doing this. There are probably hundreds of thousands of god worshipping bloody songs out there they could surely use one of them or deface another song that is not our national anthem with their religious crap. My kids school sings the nations anthem in assembly and at other official events, they sing the full anthem and even my kindy son knows the whole anthem, it isn't hard really. I wouldn't like some bloody muslim changing the words of our anthem to 'praise allah' or whatever so I would be hypocritical if I didn't find this wrong.
I am God.

well im gunna get in before this thread is locked (like every other religion thread)
there is ONE national anthem, and that is the original that should be taught and sung at school assembly like we used to... all this political correct crap has to stop, its turning this country to shit,
and whoever said that someone didnt understand religion because he stated he hated it, not really true, i hate religion too, if you had to title me with anything i spose it would be an athiest but then again thats a type of religion isnt it?
end of the line really this version of the national anthem that they will try and jam down the throats of christian childeren is stupid, thats one thing ive always hated about religion is it is forced at a young age so it becomes the normal thing, if i have children im not going to force my beliefs on them, ill let them decide what they believe when they are old enough...
oh and i learnt the second verse at school too, and im only 24 its not like they havnt sung it for decades.
Going where no late model stato/caprice has gone before.... GAME ON!!
Anyone else uncomfortable with those "i'm a mormon" ads on the telly of late? Why don't we have any hari krishna/hindu/jewish/baha'i/jedi ads to even it out?

I don't like them, not because I'm anti-religion, not because it goes against my religion, I just don't give a shit if you're a mormon, and neither does anyone else, so why tell us? I'm not a mormon, but you don't see me in advertisements saying "I love working on cars and skateboarding. Oh yeah, I'm not a mormon!"
They're just stupid & they're trying to make people go "Oh, you can still be a normal human being if you're am mormon? lets look into it!"

I dont believe in God. My kids attend a private Catholic girls school, because I believe they achieve better academically there and because I believe they will learn christian ethics, which on the whole is a good thing. They dont habitually sing the national anthem, but when they do, its the official version.
I think our national anthem is embarrassing. The score could have been written by a preteen with a xylophone, and the words are dull and uninspiring. And 'our land is gert by sea' ? give me a break lol
I do however think its the official anthem, and its a part of how we identify ourselves to the world, the same as the flag. I think both should be officially changed personally, but as long as they are the official symbols of our country, no-one has the right to change them in any way, and adding religion into it is particularly unacceptable. We have a clear separation of church and state in this country.
And please, please, please dont change our national anthem to 'Waltzing Matilda' either!! Corny song about a sheep thief.
