Man 'fires shots at hooning car'
11th October 2011
A MAN livid at hoons making a ruckus in his street allegedly shot at their car to scare them away.
Complaints were made to police shortly before midnight on Monday about cars hooning in an area of Meridan Plains.
The next call came after a 55-year-old man allegedly shot at and hit a moving car on Rainforest Dr.
The bullet from the .22-calibre rifle pierced a door and hit a 19-year-old male passenger in the leg.
It did not break the skin but bruised the teenager, police said.
After an interview with police yesterday, a 55 year old man was charged with three weapon-related offences.
Residents of Rainforest Dr said hooning was a constant battle in the quiet outer-suburban area.
Kay Williams, who lives on the road with her family, said she would not be surprised if someone shot at a hooning car out of frustration.
Ms Williams said young drivers often harassed livestock in private properties at the end of the road.
"All night long there are cars driving up and down," Ms Williams said.
"It's very regular. The weekends are worse."
Another neighbour, who asked not to be named, said he twice heard cars speeding up and down Rainforest Dr on Monday night.
The man said he would have rung police if he had heard the cars a third time.
A third resident, who has lived on the street for 20 years, said police sometimes patrolled the road.
The man who allegedly fired at a car is charged with one count each of assault occasioning bodily harm while armed with a dangerous weapon, unlawful possession of a weapon, and dangerous conduct with a weapon.
He will face Caloundra Magistrates Court on November 1.
Senior Constable Des Hansson, from the Caloundra Police Station, said the alleged shooting was reported by the victim.
Snr Const Hansson said there had been a number of complaints about hooning in the area where it happened.
"We would encourage everybody to report any hooning by calling the police station," Snr Const Hansson said. "We don't like to see people injured unnecessarily.
"Hooning is an ongoing issue.
"We try to investigate it to the best of our ability."
Anyone with information that could help police should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Witnesses to hooning should call 13 HOON (134 666).
I think the man who shot at the hoons is a bigger wanker than the hoons themselves. Who shoots at people, seriously, WTF!!
My parents live opposite North Pine Dam, and hoons ALWAYS go there and do their shit, but we don't pull out our air rifles and hunt them down, you just ring the police.

That will teach them hoons /sarcasm
Welcome to the internet where people have opinions that you might not like
Ahh the intellectually challenged morons that believe all the pathetic so called HOON hype created by the media.
Silver Certified.
Then take one patrol car from camera duty on pieces of road where accidents never happen but revenue does and stick them there for a week. Two if you can be arsed.
Really. Don’t patrol. Hide there like they do with the speed guns.
Um, they have – “Snr Const Hansson said there had been a number of complaints about hooning in the area where it happened.”
But you can’t work out what you are investigating huh?
Seriously by your own admission you have a captive audience here. Capture them!
Would this be spinning wheels on some dirt on the side of the road, a chirp of tyres taking off from the lights, donuts in a empty car park or a high speed street drag?
Drop this sensationalist headline fodder “hoon” crap and get back to applying the road rules we already have.
if its anything like QLD, ricers cruising up and down the main street all night with there loud ass fully sik cannon exhausts.
they piss me off lol.
Mmm, in 2 minds about this.
Good on the guy for taking some action and it will probably stop them from doing it in that area if there is a risk of getting shot..
Not so cool though that they could have been killed though... hooning is annoying but not worth dying over...
We've got some heros around our area but i wouldnt risk my firearms licence on getting rid of them.. damn thing was hard enough to get in the first place. Fair effort for the 22 to get through the door though.. wonder how far away the bloke was..
aZk.
WTF??? How can someone say they are not surprised someone was shot at for, from what I gather, driving a loud car up and down a road???
Considering how the article didn't specify what the "hooning" actually was, eg no burnouts or racing, it looks like these "hoons" were guilty of being wankers and making a lot of noise. But apparently public mentality these days is that it's alright to shoot hoons.
Glad I'm putting a new exhaust on my car soon because by the sound of things I can expect to be shot for my current system.
Seriously, this is all thanks to the vilification of "hoons" in the media. Anyone who drives anything but a stock camry is a hoon and apparent;y deserves to be shot.
Nice.
The label hoon is such a good invention for gov/pol becuase is sooooo ambigious. It can mean pretty much anything from a slight wheel chirp on a hot day round a corner or a full on figure 8 sesh in a cathloc orphan school car park... perfect label for them to do whatever they want. The guy who thought it up should get a pay rise cos its a ####ing great win for them... shit for us but credit where credits due.

Agreed.
I just call the new police station around the corner now. Have watched 3 guys cars get loaded on to tow trucks from drifiting in suburban streets. I dont care if people do that shit where there is nothing but empty roads and no buildings, but around homes is a joke.
PS: I know of a place where you can "borrow" a lovely PH M82 to scare away any hoons...just dont hit them, it doesn't leave much.

Would be a great case if you could force the government to specify the term.. doubt anyone would want to take the g/ment on though.. Lol, get it banned on the basis of racism. Hoon portrays a community of indivudals hence the term is offensive when used in conjunction with illegal behaviour. "Hoons" so harshly labelled would prefer to be called High Velocity and Perpendiucular Inertia Enthusists.

hoon is a slang word apprently, there not to use slang words in legislations.
someone should throw that mothalicka at the gov!
When you do things right, people won’t be sure you’ve done anything at all,,,,,,,,,

The guys was just sick of it happening over and over with nothing being done by the cops at all. At what point do you say enough is enough and the cops just are not doing the job. If they were serious about hoons, they would have used the reports and set up a sting, they might of even got a couple of cars.

not that I condone shooting a 'hoon', but if it was in fact hooning I can understand someone getting the shits if it's regularly happening in a residential area.
I've had 2 cars end up in my front yard (I live next to a corner) as a result of clowns who think they can drift, losing it in the wet. If any idiot hits my house or anything else in my yard, I'll probably take to them with a baseball bat
You can report it to the police, but it's usually difficult for them to catch them in the act.
Trust me... if you keep ringing the cops, eventually they crack the sads and do something.
I was at a party once that was gate crashed. Rang the cops after when the fights started, nothing, rang again, nothing, ranng again, nothing... after ringing them for sent out 5 police cars and the dog squad.
Persistance is the key... not shooting people.
I'm actually surprised with the responses in this thread. Usually people are saying that my views are cold and harsh. Not used to being the one calling "that's a bit harsh" lol.
