Hey all,
The Focus is in need of 4 new tyres. Not wanting to spend much at the moment, i've comes across a special on 17/45/235 for $125 each. Top right hand side of the catalouge. Tyrepower Specials QLD
$125 for a R17 seems very cheap, let alone a 235. At the moment the car has 17/45/205, so the 235's should look pretty fat.
I'm guessing these tyres are made by a cheap Taiwanese, or similar company. Has anyone had any experience with tyres these cheap?
I'm not after anything sport of performance orientated, my partner mostly drives the car , but she has concerns about such a cheap tyre not offering much safety.
I said to her all though i know very little about tyres, i would assume that regardless of the manafactuer, they would have to stick to and meet some pretty strict standards in order to make and sell tyres. Would i be correct?
I got some cheap tyres from bob jane cost me $99 a tyre and they have last me 10 months and i still have heaps of tread left on them. Mine are the same size you stated above. Go in and ask them they have lots of brand that dont get advertised and are really cheap and decent.

You mean you got 17/45/235 for $99? When we first got the car i said to be expecting anywhere from $200-300 per tyre, obviously for more decent ones, but knowing that would be cheaper alternatives. But i never thought you could get a 17/45/235 for under $100. I'll have to call them and ask.
When it comes to tyres for me, I just buy Zetum's, they told me they are the cheapest Bob Jane brand & for my specs [235/45/R17 directional] they're $125 ea.

Lets see i have had Gemstones, Suntek and RoTalla Tyres, all china brand tyres, they are all a pretty soft, hang on pretty well in the wet and dry, off ebay for about $99 each. Last a good 40k, no problems with them. Lots of people will say they are hopeless etc, but i have found them pretty good. I think tyres have come a long way in the last 15 years and pretty hard to get a tyre that is just like butter lol i will say stay away from FullRun tyres though lol
The cheaper ones make more road noise and are do not have directional tread. But most car cabins are pretty well sound insulated, and the only tyre brand I ever had a problem with was nankangs on my jaguar as they liked to slip in the wet when turning corners.
I wouldn't buy insanely cheap tyres, they are usually very bad, very poor grip. For $124 you can get Federal 595ss, amazing tyre for the money, you won't find anything better.

My Zetums [Both same on rear] are slidey in the rain ONLY if you deliberatley try to swing it out etc, but apart from that they're fine unless you do burnouts every day

I was recently asking a similar question....but in the end I figured that it was 1 area that does an important job so wasnt worth me skimping on. Safety is priceless.

i got 245 35 19's from a place in sydney for $95 each and they were very good.
Theres a place in Melbourne where I get all my tyres from, the last set just happened to be 235/45ZR17 Sailun Atrezzo ZS+ and they cost $72.50 each. They seem to grip well in the wet and are quiet. My dad got a set for his VX SS (hard to control in the wet) and he likes them as well.
Well turns out they won't fit the 235/45/17 to the wheels on the Focus anyway. He started by saying it was illeagal, but as far as i know you can go 1.3 x wider than the widest spec by the manafactuer. 205 is the standard spec so i'm fairly certain 235 wouldn't pose any legal issues.
After i said that he said they won't fit on a 7'' wide rim.
What brand are those tyres? Couldn't see a brand listed in the catalogue you posted.
