IndyCar racer Dan Wheldon was killed in a race today in Las Vegas.
As a racer myself these sorts of incidents really hit home hard at how quickly things can go wrong. it doesnt matter what safety precautions are put in place, you can never completely stop people being killed. its just the risks of motorsport.
RIP mate![]()
Really tragic news. I cant help thinking that oval track racing in open wheelers is about as dangerous as motor racing can get. The speeds are so high that as soon as wheels tangle it seems the cars end up doing back flips through the air with no run off area......Scary stuff, takes some big Cojones for sure
Pretty horrific crash, Will Power was very lucky to get away with just a sore back.
Was it wheldon who was meant to drive a V8 on the gold coast???

"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."
- Theodor Seuss Geisel
That is correct.
I watched the crash just after it happened and before Dan died. At that point the report was that several drivers were taken to hospital and I was thinking that it was bloody lucky no one was killed.
2 hours later the news came through that Dan died. Shattering. He had a young family and all.
I guess this shows just how dangerous oval racing it. The laws of physics dictact that essentially any mistake will put you into a wall.

It's amazing watching the footage who quickly things happen. If you watch the live footage is BAM and over. But watching the slow mo footage you see how a small incident triggered a sequence of events.
Allways sad and tragic seeing deaths of people trying to entertain us.

such sad news... can happen so quickly.....
so what happends for Courtney at the 600??
They were saying on tonights news that there were to be 6 indy car drivers racing at GC this weekend. They are unsure if they will be there now though. Will Power has been confirmed as not racing,He has either neck or back injury from the crash.
Very sad news about Dan,He was a talented driver.
R.I.P
will power was meant to be partnering mark winterbottom in the FPR falcon, but since he hurt his ribs and back in the crash he wont be. some irish bloke by the name of richard lyons will take powers place apparently.
bloody terrible thing to happen. its not going to be a good feeling seeing courtneys car fly past at indy this wkend knowing the bloke who was meant to be driving it came to grief in a racecar the previous wkend
we dont race for the spectators. we race for ourselves. we all know that you can die, but that is part of the thrill of it.
you are only truly alive when you stare death in the face. you hope to beat death every time, but it only takes one mistake to lose. and you can only lose once.
Steve McQueen once said "Racing is life. Anything before and after is just waiting." sums it up pretty well.
Very bad news. Some of the drivers were saying that the track was dangerous

The tribute from the drivers... This is actually surprisingly emotional to watch.
Go race Senna Dan!!!
[edit] just realised this is the same vid as the first post. Sorry. I didn't click on that one to start with!
unbelieveably sad, i love my motorsport and i still remember when mark porter died in 06 on our way up to the mountain...it is sad but there are the risks no matter how many safety features are installed on the vehicles. In saying that, i bloody hope there isn't another death in motorsport for some time.
RIP Dan Wheldon and my thoughts go out to all his family.
Yo.
just found this lads
