SA drivers are being harassed by police in other states for not having registration stickers.
Motorists have reported being fined for not displaying stickers when pulled over by police in other states.
In one case, a South Australian driver said they were forced to leave their car in Victoria and fly home to collect registration papers.
But this week it was unclear just who was responsible for warning interstate authorities that SA motorists would no longer be displaying stickers.
A call to SA Police to ask whether interstate police forces had been warned was redirected to the Transport Department.
The Transport Department also claimed it was not its responsibility and passed the inquiry to Government Enterprises Minister Gail Gago.
Ms Gago said the measure had been "extremely successful".
"I am advised the Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure wrote to interstate road transport authorities to advise them of the elimination of registration labels," she said.
"Road Safety Minister Tom Kenyon recently met with Victorian police to discuss the matter."
Both the offices of Transport Minister Patrick Conlon and Road Safety Minister Tom Kenyon refused to comment on their own discussions with interstate authorities.
A South Australian police spokeswoman was not sure who was in charge of the scheme, but said DTEI was leading it and SA Police had conveyed the information to interstate police.
"Victoria Police is aware of legislation change in South Australia which has seen registration labels no longer issued to light vehicles," she said.
"Anybody who believes they may have incorrectly received an infringement in regards to this is advised to seek a review of the penalty."
So all the S.A. authorities are ducking for cover so they don’t get the blame and the Vics don’t care. The cops doing this are obviously just being pigs. How hard could it be to find out if these S.A. drivers were lying and how well are they doing their jobs if they are totally clueless of other states rules? Basically another ill conceived decision that was intended to be of benefit purely to the lawmakers/government/institutions in question. And as usual the motorist is treated with utter contempt. Because after all it is a privilege for us to use the roads we pay for over and over again
What is the reason for the lack of rego labels? I can't see a logical reason?
they save money on printing them, and the secret hope is you forget to register your car and get busted, and make it look like sapol is doing their job
smart scheme![]()
But surely you get a letter in the mail saying it's up for renewal in a few weeks? Ours is 6ish weeks in advance so you can get some money together to pay. Don't they send something to remind you it's due? I mean if they send something out then surely it doesn't matter if it does or doesn't have a sticker on it, right?
From another forum:
just recived a fine in WA for not have a rego sticker on my SA car " or proof of registration ? "
officer actually laughed at me and said " you think we have the technology to look that up here in WA "
after pressing further i was warned " you dont tell me how to do my job and i wont impound the car and lock it right here untill you can show proof of registration "
so i shut up because 50ks out of karratha isnt a nice place to be stranded at 5:30 pm
so bring on monday !!This is just one of a few tales I have read. Quite scary really when you are doing the right thing by having no sticker but end up at the mercy of courts.finaly got in to the cop shop this morning after much ado i was told that the officers cant cancel the fine i have to write a letter to a department that no one has the address for O_o
so ive been instructed instead to send a letter to the payments office and if that fails to take it to court
To gain confirmation of your SA registration details you would need to send a written request to our Information Services Section. The letter should include the reasons why you require the information and your client/licence number, registration plate number, date of birth, address and contact telephone number. Please ensure you sign the application personally.
This confirmation attracts a fee of $22.00. Now i pay $22 to get out of a $50 fine
let the comedy train roll onwards
What a ####wit cop ^
In QLD you can recieve a fine for having an out of date label attatched but not for no label at all
Cheap, fast, reliable.....you only get to choose two.
It's pretty simple. You receive a letter weeks and weeks in advance, when it's time (set a reminder in your phone) go online and buy it. Done.
You get an online receipt that you can print and put in your glove box, no issues.
Personally I think it's a great idea to get rid of the stickers and as long as you have the receipt in your car no cop can do anything that can't be challenged.
And even better is when you forget to change the label and get both fines.
To the OP your statement that the cops are "obviously just being pigs" is false. Do you honestly think the cops can make a simple phone call and make sure everything is on the level. The various states/state transport services, barely talk to each other at the best of times.
I would be much easier if the SA transport authority gave out some form of legit certificate you can put in the glove-box and carry with you to show current registration. Hell my current registration certificate stays in my glovebox at all times, only to be taken out to put the new one in.

WA has also done away with registration stickers. I think they ceased about 2 years ago. It's up to the car owner to make sure their registration is valid, although the transport department do send out reminders before the registration is due. You can also look up your car's registration online or via app if you are not sure if your car rego is due or not.
Really when i ride my bike i keep it in my pocket stuck to some plastic and the few times i've been pulled over the cops don't care
BTW we don't need them anyway
cops have from your rego number, your pic, licence number, any fines out standing warrants etc etc ....your address and everything else the need
Doesn't make him full of it at all. WA cop wasn't aware that SA vehicles no longer have stickers and that is what he was nailing him for. Read it again, he says the WA cop told him he didn't have the technology to check SA registrations which sums up what the OP's report states, that the message hasn't filtered through to other interstate Police.
some of you may have heard my reference to being pulled over 17 times over 15 straight hours driving from katoomba to adelaide recently.
15 of those times happened in NSW...... at last rego i deliberately got as much rego as I could and left the sticker on, i got pulled over once in queensland for an RBT on the way out of there (also the last day of uni games week so fair enough to single out a P plater).
Bathurst was on and 7 of these times were in bathurst alone just being pulled in for RBT's some within a space of 2 minutes. Asked a few cops after a while if they made notes of who they pulled over got told no.
Every other cop who just pulled me over for a license inspection checked my rego sticker the nice ones let me go but I had several who wanted to do me for driving a highpowered car and had to go back to the car to call in and check SA's laws.
Last cop who pulled me over in nsw went straight to look at my rego sticker and I remarked to her that we dont have them anymore, and as shes looking at it she then tells me that unless the car had the sticker on it, she wouldnt be able to pull any info on me as the systems arent linked from state to state.
Which seems freaking stupid?
When I got stopped by Vicpol just before the SA border.... he didnt even bother looking for a rego sticker or checking my license. Just remarked I was lucky to have a fast car, RBT'd me and sent me on my way, as im leaving noticed his car had what looks like our plate scanners on it.
So seems a bit hit and miss who's in on the no stickers scheme
surely it cannot be hard to check the rego on a car.
i know for vic you can jump on vicroads, do a rego check and see most details about the car.
it couldnt be that hard for police to have something like that on them?
or even if speed cameras had these on them.
also the NSW police who wanted you done for a high powered car have no idea of the laws.
on P's you follow your own states regulations for P's. so if you can drive to speed limit in home state, you can drive to speed limit there.
(this was the official response i got from NSW RTA)
Havent had stickers n WA for a while now, when they fased it out we were all warned to carry rego papers if we planned on driving interstate as computer systems are not linked together,
Not really rocket science. Its common knowledge that you cant get demirit points on ur interstate license due to each state having different systems aso its pretty obvious that the rego component of car registration would be different too.
My understanding of the rationale for not having rego stickers anymore is that number plate recognition (in police cars, speed cameras, safety cameras and red light cameras) means cars are being checked for current registration many times without the driver being aware. I know of one driver who was pulled over by the NSW Police over five years ago for his car being unregistered based on their number plate recognition capability and automatic computer check.
I believe that NSW is currently reviewing the need for rego stickers as well. Makes sense as the new technology is better than checking a sticker, particularly on the move.
Traffic cops are no different than the mob. Only the cops have the right away to fleece people of there cash. I especially love the signs that say Speed camera ahead "for road safety" Biggest load of shit ever. Speed camera will do absolutely nothing to save a friggin life. It's all about revenue collecting, and we let them do it. Thats all this cop was doing here in this instance aswell, probably got a chip on his shoulder too.
Heh , back in the 70's I could always tell how many years my old man had owned his cars for by the amount of stickers along the top of the screen![]()
WA doesnt have rego stickers either, i always get asked where mine is lol
Going where no late model stato/caprice has gone before.... GAME ON!!
