Ok, time to renew my insurance policies for home. Easy enough untill I had a good broker ask a few questions.
I am in the process of insuring my spare parts enough to fill 2 shipping containers enough to build 4 complete cars, all parts are cataloged and listed but having trouble working out their value. Alot of these parts are just no longer available, some have aftermarket equivelents but arent the same as the original holden ones.
Things like genuine tail lights, headlights, chrome mouldings, brand new body panels, diffs, gearboxes, original unused windscreens & window glass rolls of fabric stuff that just.
My question is how the hell do you put a value on this stuff the insurer is only interested in a dollar value??
cheers

have a mechanic appraise them with certification for your policy, might cost you a little but will help you get the value you desire and the documentation to support your claim if need be
Couldn't you just insure the parts as complete cars? Like, if you've got the parts to build a Torana that's worth $20,000, surely you could insure all the parts as a bundle for $20,000 if you have a list of everything that's there.

try $69,000 for a nice SLR 5000 nowbut I see where your coming from
The problem the stuff is in storage in a couple of containers in the back of a shed, and the stock is just so varied and NOT replacable some I have bought some inherited from family, friends & other contacts. Things like I have 8m of original herringbone for brock group A seats and 8m of original cerulean blue velour, and 8m each of the 2 types of vynal used in them as well as 6m of hounds tooth, all kinds of fabric that is irriplacable, the aftermarket stuff just isnt the same. Scheel seats, close ratio M21 V8 boxes, XU1 4 speed, 186s engine LH SLR dash, A9x dash,LX hatch and other toranna bits, assortment of diffs, body panels, interior parts, heaps of chrome mouldings most parts are brand new never fitted to cars bought from holden when becoming obsolete, My oldest NOS part being a bonnet badge for an EJ Holden.
I doubt a mechanic can put a value on alot of this stuff and thats my dilemma. It took me a week and a half cataloging all the stuff for the insurance company

The premium will probably be the same as your house premium, as long as you have evidence of what is insured and nominate a price they will pay that price as long as it is not exorbadent. I woul go with the "complete" car option - if you could build a car out of the parts, catalogue it as a car (specifying to be built) and then price the remainder.
Easy mate. Unless you are gonna sit down and try to value each item then you just put a round figure on the lot that sounds right. I don't think you can price parts with the value of finished cars cos parts don't have soul man ...
Just pull a number with an educated guess $150,000. job done. And as far as proving their worth and all that, just get the broker to come and witness the gear himself and say 150k OK ?
