I don't like the guy and I think he's a mediocre CEO at best as far as making business decisions, but when it comes to industrial relations I completely agree with him. He's got balls! Do not back down to union thugery!
Just because he is playing hardball, doesn't really make him a good CEO. A good CEO could keep the business going well and his employees happy at the same time.
As usual the employer would like to pay the employees the minimum wage, and the Unions would rather all the employees to get paid a fortune so they can take more Union fees. I think everyone needs a lesson in being content with what they have.
Rufys, you mentioned earlier you were hiring, so I can understand that your perspective is don't back down to the Unions. Myself, I've not been out of high school too long, and Unions stop young kids and adults getting ripped off by a dodgy boss.
And without Unions we would never have won 8 hour days.

I work in a union free environment and seem to easily pay more than union dominated companies in the same sector. I agree there is a place for unionism, but there needs to be realistic controls placed on them at times.
I'm sorry what? I said I think he's a mediocre CEO at best.
But not being a decent CEO doesn't make this move any less ballsy.
I can't stand unions. If each of these employees was legally allowed to negotiate their own employment conditions, EVERYONE would be happy, there'd be no unions and not strike action. Bring back AWAs ffs!
never heard of him
I really know nothing about this dispute beyond what is written in the papers but every time Alan Joyce gets his head on the tv I think of this guy:

AWA's a brilliant if you're a boss and a nightmare if you're a worker.
AWA's cut out penalty rates, shift loadings, public holiday pay because as usual, you give people power and they abuse the privilege.
Not suggesting you would abuse it mate, but people did, indeed the majority did. Everyone would not be happy, everyone wasn't happy, that's why they got rid of them. Say what you will about the current Labour government, but they got rid of AWA's - one of the biggest mistakes the Howard government made.
Sorry Reaper, but I think this guy is closer. I wonder if Joyce will hire young asian children in place of all the workers?:

Congratulations Alan Joyce. Can't keep planes in the air. Excellent CEO. Have 5 million for managing people so well. Go back to Ireland
You do realise his annual salary dropped this financial year and the amount of options that make around 40% balance of the $5mill are contingent on the Qantas share price rising by around 50% in the next 12 months. As a share holder I'd be very happy if he could deliver such a return to me although I'd also suggest it is highly unlikely and thus said money is unlikely to be ever realised.

I feel sorry for you actually having shares in QANTAS. 40%. I'm sure he's struggling. Got a little off topic anyways
Rufys brought them up, by saying "bring them back ffs" in his first post.
In W.A. mining industry, it resulted in higher pay. However in other sectors, rates of pay dropped:
Parliamentary Questions - Assembly, AUSTRALIAN WORKPLACE AGREEMENTS, RATES OF PAY
"In May 2004, Western Australians working under AWAs had average total weekly earnings of $728.40. Western Australian employees on AWAs now earn, on average, $65.10 a week less than those working under collective federal certified agreements, and $21.80 a week less than those working under collective state industrial agreements."

Unions make more problems than they solve.
End of story.
Do any of the workers have the skill, experience, knowledge or abilities that a massive company like QANTAS needs from a CEO? Jobs/positions get paid what they are worth, not saying that QANTAS employees are getting ripped off or getting too much already, I don't know enough about the issue (I'm speaking generally) and it may have been a bad time to give him a pay rise, but Alan Joyce deserves every cent of his payrise, and 98% of stakeholders in QANTAS agreed with that statement as they were the ones who gave it to him.
Got a superannuation fund??? Highly likely you have shares in them if you do. I don't actually hold any shares in Qantas beyond what may or may not be in my Super fund btw. Been trading other markets outside the ASX for quite some time now - much more predictable and less tied to Europe/USA's stupidity.

Industrial relations at its best...lol.... another Patrick's/Webb dock about to happen....
The MUA has never been the same since ... We one.... we one nothing !!!!.
Qantas only pulled this action to bring the goverment into try and stong arm the unions and scare members,
This counrty was built with unions and if not for unions you wouldnt enjoy the conditions you have today even your so called negotiated agreements.
I'm Blue Collar union man and PROUD of it......

Yeah I have a super fund. Didn't cut in half over the last 12 months like QANTAS' share price. Was under the impression you had purchased shares. Apologies
From what I understand the crux of this dispute is about Qantas guaranteeing various jobs (which they are reluctant to do). The union is afraid of sending maintenance off shore. Will be interesting to see how this one plays out.
