Australian manufacturing labour costs companies far too much. Coupled with the vast majority thinking primarily about two things, fuel efficiency and safety, when buying a car, the end of the Commodore (and Falcon for that matter) as we know it is inevitable.

Just heard on the radio that it is going offshore and that over 300 design engineers will be losing their jobs. All the cars will be finished of with minor details here in OZ tho.

APESMA is actually a union that is affiliated with the ACTU so no wonder they are squawking.

Although in the scheme of things I can't imagine there would be massive cost savings with outsourcing 300 engineers.

Was going to happen sooner or later though - local car industry can't be propped up forever with government subsidies.

Why the hell are there 300 engineers working on the same thing anyway? Makes no sense to me. Unless of course this is another case of the term "Engineer" being used VERY loosely...

Inevitable but sad. Our preoccupation with large powerful rear wheel drive sedans is almost unique in the world. It is very likely that will be lost. Front wheel drive diesels for all of us I fear.

I recon... one thread is enough:

Terrible news for the future of the Commodore

    Cheers.
