That's the headline, looks like the upcoming Merc S-Class will have the ability to drive autonomously up to 40kph.
Self driving cars by 2013
Mercedes-Benz engineer Dr Stefan Schweher told the website the technology "allows the driver to concentrate on other things" while they navigated morning or evening traffic. - Presumably eating a sandwhich or something...
Thoughts? I mean it's probably 50 or 60 years away from being completely reliable and autonomous in anything but the S-Class, but would you use it? Trust it? I can see it's helpfulness if you're on the M5 parking lot in Sydney, get a bit of work done.

I'll be he comes to get you, some shopping trolley kind of thing, that gets you where your going nice and slow... Well off you go that's fine, the pleasure's all mine.

It would we ilegal to use the phone, have a shave or even eat breakfast let alone do any work while it would be self driving so i cant really see the point behind it, self parking i can see there being a big call for, not many people know how to reverse park?
DEAD ON ARRIVAL
sounds like a good idea to me, as the OP said, in sydney we have a car park that they try pass off as a motorway, called the M5. its 100 for most of the main traffic areas but during the peak hours 6-9am and 3-7pm, would be lucky to get over 20 for more then 100 metres.
for low speed traffic situations i dont see a problem. except the driver falling asleep. i know i have come close a few times, crawling home on the m5 after work, when i had the auto work car it was very easy to get too relaxed,

This remind me of the time a mate came over in his new 5 series BMW and was boasting about an option the car has where its zero's in on the car in front of you then you set your cars distance to how ever far away that car is and it will speed up or slow down until the set distance is matched all the time..
This was a great feature until a car pulled out between us and didn't re calibrate in time almost sending us threw the windshield....hehehe...good times
Pfft, it isn't even hard to drive a friggin' car. Why not make mobile toilets so I don't have to walk to the toilet, or just add escalators to houses instead of stairs, or remote controlled ... Scrap that, that involved moving my hands.
Self-Driving cars might need a "fat person hoist" built into them since judging off the way we're going, driving is the only excersize we get.

its an interesting concept. thats a given.
however do you really want to have your whole lives revolving around technology and not being able to do things yourself.
and afterall technology is not fool proof!
all it could take is a glitch or a little bit of a lagging system in a car and bam it would cause problems everywhere.
as long as you could still drive the car yourself when you want sure.
but as said in another thread that would make that 1 car a variable that might not be able to be calculated in the system.
which could mean no more car driving for anyone.
they have had this technology for years, its just all people want to be in control and with this its not, so it has not been viable to put it into cars. you all know this.
this would be a good thing for the 95% of asian drivers that have trouble driving a car themselves
As long as the on board computer doesnt run Windows it would give new meaning tot he Blue Screen of Death...lol
