Police have released photos of a car that split in half when it crashed at Mawson Lakes overnight and say the occupants are lucky to be alive.
At 10.40pm last night police attended a serious crash on Main North Road, Mawson Lakes where a Nissan Skyline had collided with a stobie pole.
The impact of the crash was so severe that the vehicle was cut in half. The rear section wrapped around the stobie pole and the front end of the car completely separated and located 50 metres away.
Witnesses reported two males ran from the destroyed car and despite an extensive search of the surrounding area, they weren't located.
At about 9.30am today a 30-year-old Para Hills man attended the Golden Grove Police Station and stated that he was the driver. He is not seriously injured.
At this stage it is unclear if there was another person in the car at the time of the collision.
It is believed that there may have been another vehicle involved and police are asking for any witnesses who may have seen the maroon Nissan Skyline before the crash to come forward. In particular we are asking for the driver of a late model white Holden Commodore sedan and a taxi who may have some information about the crash to contact police.
Chief Inspector John De Candia stated, “It is clear from the severity of the damage to this vehicle that the occupants are extremely lucky to have not been more seriously injured or even killed.”
“With the festive season approaching this crash is a timely reminder of the need to drive safely and responsibly on our roads.”

WTF is a stobie and why do they need to be on a power/telephone pole?
And just looking at the pictures, is this from 1960 or something? Why is the power/telephone pole made from rusted steel and concrete? What sort of backwards, hick town did this happen in?
Stobie pole is what we call our telephone poles; mesh re-enforced concrete with a steel pillar up each side. They're rusted because they have been there for years and to this day, still standing (even when idiots plow Skylines into them). They're located all over SA.
