    Default Bike people

Just wanting some opinions and advice.

I have been offered a 2005 Kawasaki gpx 250 for my vp.
Does any one here no anything about these bikes? what they go like, what they're worth?
I'm not a bike fan and I'm thinking more of what will I get for it if I sell it on or trade it in.

    cheers.

gpx's are reliable but outdated (circa 1980's) junk. You might get a few grand but most learners will buy a more modern looking little ninja or cbr

me too, now that LAMS is in place there is no need to waste the money on a 250 for a first bike.
No matter what make/model you buy, they are painful. The GPX is ok for running around town, but gutless. And the baby 4 cylinder CBR's & Ninja's get along ok (for a 250), but you need to constantly rev the shit out of them, especially on the highway (7000-9000rpm at 100kph!!). Most tire of them quickly.

As for the swap, have a look at your local market to see what the GPX's are selling for. It really depends on what local demand is. All I can say is bikes are generally more of a pain in the arse to sell than cars. If you wanted the bike for your own use it would be worth considering, but you've got to remember that you've got to advertise the bike again, endure people who want to 'test ride' and then if there is anything majorly wrong with it (if you don't know much about bikes then you can be easily be caught out unaware), then it may not even be worth fixing due to the very high cost of bike repairs/parts

Personally, I'd stay away from it.

WRONG!!! It's about power to weight ration and it's based on kw not torque. Get yourself a good, torquey bigger bike and it will not only be a much more comfortable ride, you'll have better acceleration too.

When i got my licence a while ago i never worried about wasting my money on a 250cc. I'd been riding dirt for a long time anyway and knew how to ride a bike and was also over 30 at the time. I got my L's and P's with no bike, waited till i got my full licence and bought what ive always wanted for years.

LAMS only came into Victoria in 07 so before then you didn't have a choice but to ride a bike under 300cc.

Mate of mine did the same thing with the same sort of experience. His first road bike was a GSXR-1000. Best thing I did was talk him into doing it ONCE, doing it RIGHT.

Exactly. I mean i'd only recommend riding a big bike as your first bike if you have had your drivers license for a while aswell as actual motorcycle riding experience. Liter bikes can get away from you in a BIG hurry lol.

At the end of the day if you respect the bike and dont twist the throttle so far then you are pretty safe. The big word here is RESPECT lol.

If you look at his post he says its a 2005 model so not a 1980's piece of junk (although there were practically NO changes to the GPX since the early 90's lol). At the end of the day I would say he would get more for a 2005 GPX then he would for a VP, but as has been pointed out bikes can be rather different to sell then a car. Despite what everyone else has been saying OP, the fact is there is still a high demand for 250cc bikes despite being able to have up to 660cc on your L's now. a LOT of people with little to no riding experience before getting their L's only want a small bike. Hence why mid 90's GPX's are still selling for >$2K.

It will only sell for around $2500 anyway, but having said that, you must have a good VP if you think you will get $2500 for it. Otherwise, I'd swap it as you would get more for the bike than you would the car.
