Hey everyone,
Lets say someone is born deaf, Eventually learn sign language for their respectful culture/lifestyle/etc.
How do they think? Do they imagine the hand gestures?
You may assume that their thoughts would consist of the language in which the culture they are born into, But if they have never heard the words. How does that work?
Discuss...
Cheers
Mat

If they were born deaf, then they would have no idea of sound, or "thinking what something sounds like."
They would just know that a Ball is **this hand guesture.**
And an Apple is **this hand guesture.**
There would most likely be no inner voice/thinking what words sound like, because they have never been exposed to it, to recognise sounds/words.
IMO.Ponder that Mofo's...
The process of thinking uses input from all parts of the brain, however some parts have more to contribute than others. Deaf or blind people think just the same as people who can hear/see do. However their thoughts are converted by what their separate parts of the brain can contribute. If they have never heard words, the part of the brain (temporal lobe) that usually would provide dialogue to their thoughts, instead would contribute how they normally express themselves (sign language or other iconic representations) to create thought, just as we rely on an inner voice.
Another quick fact is that it is a myth that we only use 10% of our brains. We use the whole lot. The 10% nonsense was a mistake made in the early days of neuro-science when they mistakenly thought that only certain structures in the brain produced thought, now with our more advanced scanning equipment, we know that we use all of our brain.
So the next question is: do politicians think?
I'm leaving now.....
wierd thoughts by you hozy (what else to expect? =P )
but its a good point
i wonder though if this occurs.
that they can actually talk in their head? (like when you think in your head you can talk to yourself as in when your writing and you talk in your head and write out the words if that makes sense? =P )
however i do know of someone who is deaf (and i presume since they were born)
they can read the words you are saying and speak back to you.
so maybe it is possible?
i guess you would have to ask a deaf person who eventually gets a bionic ear maybe?
This is as endless as asking "If you're born blind, how do you know what stuff looks like"

It's much the same as why you can 'see' dreams, but not REALLY see them. Your eyes are not receiving a visual image and converting it into a visible format, your brain is turning a lack of input into a new form to keep itself occupied. It's hard to imagine without being deaf yourself, but I expect they have no clue what it means to 'hear' something either.
