Not that it matters - you're a fool if you even think of committing an offense around Christmas. Double demerits, and the cops being out in force over the festive season, is nothing new at all.

Explained as simply as possible: If you break the road rules (and therefore the law), and you get done by the cops, you will get twice the amount of demerit points recorded on your license as you normally would. For example, if you get pulled up for doing something that you would normally get say, 4 demerit points for, over the festive season you will get 8.

its their attempt at making people be more alert on the roads, so they have to scrape less people off the tarmac.

people should just be more alert all the time, not only during holidays

Nope not done here. They were going to try in 2010 but the idea was scrapped.

Fortunately no double demerits in Vic... having said that I haven't had a fine since April 1 2006 so it probably wouldn't affect me anyway

I try and take it easy around this time anyway since this is when so many people get killed or hurt driving on unfamiliar roads and I don't fancy adding my number to the statistics

Don't you guys know anything? If you break the law, you get bashed, simple!! F-ck speeding, or anything else like that for that matter, especially when so many people and families are on our roads at this time of the year. What I hate, though, is the women [No sexism here, just an observation] in carparks of like, Chermside and Strathpine etc, it's like seriously, do you not know how to park? They get into this christmas frenzy, I hate it.

Anyway, drive safe, because if you crash into me, I'll bet your ass with a blender!

Attitudes towards driving suck in Australia.

On a recent trip the the US speed limits on the interstates were only a suggestion, driving through Texas where the speed limit was 80mph we sat on 90+ and everywhere else where it was 75, we sat on 85-90. Keeps traffic flowing much better and there are less road rage incidents. It also helps that people actually do get out of the fast lane when a faster car approaches from behind.

I am a firm believer that slower speed limits cause more problems than higher ones.

Oh, and I love the 4 way stop signs, come to a cross road, every side has a stop sign, the rule is first in, first out. You only really give way to one car at a time, no hold ups at a stop sign for ages waiting for a clear road.

I agree. I would love to be able to find the numbers on how many accidents occur in 80kph+ zones against 80kph- zones.

I bet there are more low speed crashes at intersections, school zones and residential streets than there are on freeways.

I'm pretty sure the double demerits thing is all bs. Could be wrong. They actually did a study and the ratio of people doing the speed limit to others doing around 5 km/h over was something like 1:3 for good traffic flow.
Welcome to the internet where people have opinions that you might not like

not sure if they do the double demerit thing at christmas but queensland already has double demerits if you are caught speeding more than once in a 12 month period
somebody told me that over the holiday period it was double fines and points.

not that we really have anything to worry about
yesterday morning i drove from ipswich to the sunshine coast which is about 120 ks and only saw 1 speed camera and 1 other police car
coming back last night there were none

I came across these whilst driving from Washington to Kentucky... I asked a local what if 4 cars turned up at once ( or heavy traffic like one i experienced in a shopping car park ) and they all wanted to turn left ? He couldn't answer me... so i guess roundabouts aren't that bad......
