Hey all,
I live in perth (WA), and i am currently seeking work in the mining industry. I am currently taking lessons to get my HR licence and was wondering if anyone could assist me gaining employment up at any mine site. I'm willing to take whatever is going whether it is as a T/A or a labourer. Wouldn't mind an apprenticeship either. So if anyone has any useful input or advice I would greatly appreciate it. (and yes I am over 18)
Get yourself registered with an employment agency, get your white card, maybe a working at heights ticket, and do a mines employment course. There is a mob down here in Bunbury that do courses but an employment agency will be your best bet. Try WorkPac or Hays.
I know it's a pain in the ass to get in, and it's simply alot easier with someone you know already in there.
Some places online you can pay for and they get you into the mining industry, but it's a hit and miss I would say.
NRW are looking for 500 people at the moment and EDI Downer (what was known as Roche Mining) are SERIOUSLY understaffed at Christmas Creek (FMG mine out of Newman) and looking for people. If you dont mind being a truckie (I mention this as you stated that you were looking for an apprentship, but get your foot in the door first and then look to move perhaps). Phone both of these companies.
ill add to what 05 has said.
DOWNER are an absolutely Huge company. if you get in with them you would be set for life =P
im not so sure about the works side, but the i know that with the electrical side of them you can learn an absolute bucketload through them.
also as said above.
licences and tickets will help you get in.
aswell as experience in the field (or similar fields)
tickets i would suggest as a minimum
- Construction Industion
- EWP which includes the biggest booms available if possible (this includes scissor)
- First Aid (Lv2) its easy and wortwhile. not always required but would help
- any Mining Induction courses
also dont just pidgeon hole yourself into the mines side of things.
even if you can get a job with say downers that isnt in the mines for example still take it. as eventually you could be sent to the mines.
as i have said already. you can learn so much from them.
but goodluck
My boss knows the fleet manager of EDI Downer here in Victoria, as we service all there vehicles. The guys name is Dale, but i'm not sure if he would be able to help or not.
Downer currently has everyone on wait lists as they arent looking to get their new projects here going til mid jan at earliest and most of the other mines are currently saying nothing til mid jan earliest. But yeah get your feelers out, register with the likes of Hays, Downer etc.
Im in the same boat as you (undersuspicion) mate. I just got a job doing traffic controlling, hopefully thats a good foot in the door. If that makes any sense.
I reject your reality and substitute my own.
save yourself the heartache of getting used to the big coin then losing it in the next GFC, its going to be a big one
I'm trying as well, it definitely helps if you know people already in the mines.. Doesn't help me much![]()
maybe try hitting up the smaller contractor mobs for any work they have going too, i dunno what its like over west but on the east coast coal mines its like a big revolving door.. people constantly leaving thinking the grass is greener elsewhere and not enough coming in to replace them
smaller mobs dont seem to mind putting trainees on cos they will generally stay there for a while until they get enough experience to move on.
as said already get some tickets, general induction etc done. and anything u can think of thats safety related put that on ya resume
I certainly hope the next GFC is a huge one, im on the big coin and saving madly to BUY SHARES when it happens, i will make a killing e.g Rio Tinto shares were $175 before the last one, they dropped down to $40 during the GFC and in 2 years they recovered to $89, i love the thought of doubling my money in 2 to 3 years.
As for getting jobs there. getting all them tickets and adding 50 cents will get you a phone call (lol). Very rare anyone will touch you if you dont have experience for a FIFO role, really the only way would be move to somewhere (with them tickets) and work as a residential, Pt Hedland is good, or Karratha, Parabadoo,Tom Price but costs(rent food etc) are expensive. You could also try somewhere like Kalgoorlie but again you would need to be residential and go thru someone like Skilled.
I do know BHP, FMG and Gina Reinhart are doing rail expansions, do you mind doing 12 hour days in 45 degree heat?

If your willing to work underground it's Easyer to get on green. Plus the top paying jobs in underground mining pay way more then the top jobs in open cut mining. Some good jumbo operators are on $300 000 a year. That sort of money can be mad in about 5 or 6 years I'd you buckle down and commit. Entry level jobs start around 90 000 pa a bit less ten entry level open cut jobs but it's worth it in the end. Truck drivers and offsides are in huge demand. Look at some underground contractors like Barminco, pybar, Byrnecut, Macmahon's, red path there is heaps of contractors out there. Contractors is where the money's at in underground mining. Good luck.

try australian contract mining (ACM), they hire alot of newbies, and the are FIFO to perth,
Its all so easy in hindsight looking back on where it peaked and bottomed out. If you threw 100 grand into them at $60-$70 per share thinking it may have bottomed out there would be some sleepless nights watching it crash further. Obviously there's money to be made if you get it right but its closer to gambling than investing. Have a look at what the experts say about the property market at the moment. Some think its bottomed out, others think it will crash a further 60%. The truth is no one knows whats gonna happen until it happens
I think the easiest way to get into the mines is through the pit entrance.
