I'm sure there has been one but I don't remember so here goes.
Anyone here keen on fishing? If so, what sort and where? Also put up some stories of the one that did or didn't get away and also what you would like to catch.
My school holidays as a kid were usually spent with the old man in the tinny on the Moruya River fishing all day and quite a few nights. I once saw my granddad pull a monster flathead out of the river. It came in at 8Kg and by the time we made it back to the boat ramp people were already talking about it!
I was bought up on salt water fishing and I still love it today. Dad has since upgraded boats and about 4 times a year we get out to sea, heading out of Bermagui. We usually chase flatties, snapper, morwong and other reef fish. Next Easter though we are going to head out to the continental shelf and try and chase some tuna or sharks. My dream is to catch a 4 foot mako. I reckon it would be unreal!
Anyways, post up your own stories!
On Thursday im heading to South Australia to go fishing for 10 days. We usually drive along the Coorong beach and head back the opposite way towards Robe.
Hopefully chasing some nice mulloway, snapper, salmon, gummies etc.. Also do plenty of diving for crays and abalone's.
I reject your reality and substitute my own.
For New Years weekend Me, My brothers, Sister, Mum, Dad and cousins headed out to a local place called Coochin creek. It is supposedly a good spot but we didn't catch a single fish. ( we were not in a boat ). Im getting a tow bar on my SR5 on Thursday and already have my eye on a few boats...should be good
Love fishing have a 5.5m blackarrow plate alloy (custom made) with a 115hp yamaha outboard. Anything from barra to bluewater gets smashed in my boat. To many stories to mention. Come to the NT, all you southeners(sp?) don't know what fishing is.
Take it easy...But do take it...
Do not argue with an IDIOT.
He will just drag you down to his level an beat you with experience.
Some people take me the wrong way, Like smacking up Marijunna.
My goal is to spend a week fishing up north. It looks bloody insane! GTs, tuna, doggies… that would be the life!
Yea... Sounds awesome...
Always loved fishing, generally its in Western Port bay hunting big red, pinkies, a good old gummy, elephants and best of all king george whiting. Also have done freshwater on Lake Eildon, different style of fishing, but my god its relaxing spending a winters day on the water up there.
Best fishing story, one arvo about 2:30pm my old man, sister and myself decided we had to go fishing! in the water and at our spot by about 3-3:15 (we were at the holiday house close to a ramp) and within the next hour i'd brought in two nice 50cm snapper and we were stoked, then dads rod loaded up and took off on a massive run, not much later we had a good 3 and a half foot gummy being bled from the boat! Then the sister pipes up that shes feeling sick, she got the oldand we kept fishing, within the next 10 minutes my rod screamed off! i can still picture looking down to see what the hell it was once it was beside the boat and all i could see was a shark...looked massive when it was 10 feet below the boat, got it up beside the boat...and it was still pretty big! was a 4 and a half foot gummy (cop that dad) so in a fishing trip that lasted about 2 hours from boat ramp to boat ramp we snagged 2 nice reds and 2 awesome gummys.
oh yeah, fishing dream: Catch a 100kg tuna off Portland, a 10kg snapper in western port, and a good sized mako/any toothy shark
Yo.
i have a 5 m half cabin and usually head out to the reefs off the gold and sunshine coasts
heading down to jumpinpin in the morning chasing flathead
on wednesday heading out west of brisbane to go after bass from an inflateable boat
also have a 4wd and head up the beach from noosa north shore in winter
Any type of fishing does me, although I dont get out as much as I would like. Used to own a 4.5m searunner, used to go off werribee, had some fun when the snapper wouldnt bite, we would chase Garfish, who would of thought such a small fish would be so much fun?
Also done some Trout fishing on Lake Taupo in NZ whilst on our honeymoon, NZ trout are a heap bigger than what we get here, the missus even managed to catch the biggest one for the day!!
Living near the Golburn river, I should get out and hunt down those Trout and Red Fin more though.
Talking about the Moruya River brings up a non fishing related funny story, a few years ago my parents managed the Moruya Caravan Park, one day the old man was out on the ride on mower cutting next to the river and and managed to roll the mower and get trapped between it and the rocks along the river.
He was stuck there for a while till the local copper heard him from the other side of the river, two coppers managed to slip over on the rocks and slice open their hands on those razor sharp oysters whilst getting him out. The old man got away with a small bump and bruising. Managed to make the front page of the local rag and all.
^^ Did they own the one that used to be on the town side of the river which has since been closed or the one that was behind the servo on the Batemans Bay side?
We went down to the coast the other week, tried several different spots, fishing off the rock walls and what not. had absolutly no luck,. not even a few nibbles. eventually stopped in at Byron Bay and threw a line in the river because the water was calmer and my young one was whining about to much wind by the ocean. As the tide was going out we managed to pull in 7 or 8 silver trevally in about half an hour. All really good size too. The most exciting one was the one my 4 year old caught. Was his first fish and he is still bragging about it.
Man i don't know where to start i got heaps of stories, i'll bring more up as i remember them.
One memorable occasion was when i was a kid, I was only about 8 years old and living in Westbury Tasmania. A friend of ours had a dam stocked with rainbow trout, so he called us all round for a fish because the dam was leaking. So the plan was to get all the fish out then use all the water for the crops before he lost it all. My brother and i were only using cheap rods and reels from K-mart. So when my brother got an 8 pound rainbow on it the drag on the reel kept locking up, but we managed to get it in. I got one as well same size had some similar issues but i got it in. They were beautiful on webber too, only just fit minus the heads.
I wish i could find the bloody picture, i was looking everywhere last night for it. I'll edit this post, and put it up if i find it.
I usually fish just south of Moruya at Tuross Head, Tuross Lake is generally very good fishing. I generally go out on my old man's boat, 15 foot aluminium bow rider, she's a decent boat.
Flathead are the pick for me, great eating, easy as hell to fillet up and cook. Though there's plenty of stuff in there. I really need to go down there again soon...
Anyone who does, do yourself a favour and go to "The Boat Shed", great food, good tackle, bait's available.
The New Ride - The Class 2 Shuttle Craft (VE)
I'll be he comes to get you, some shopping trolley kind of thing, that gets you where your going nice and slow... Well off you go that's fine, the pleasure's all mine.
When I light the nitro on my HQ 454 Monroe!
I remember as a teenager, fishing in a little town just shy of the qld/nsw border. Hastings point. as kids we would skip the ocean fishing and throw a line in off the bridge on the inlet, you would have a brim on your line before the bloody thing hit the water, and there was always tons of pelicans waiting for a feed on the catches. It was amazing and a great novelty as a young one as you didnt have to have any patience at all.
Stopped in a couple of years back and dropped in a line, got a few nibbles, but certainly not the same as it once was. Still a beautiful spot though.
I went up to the north a few years back for a two week holiday, spent 12 of the 14 day trip doing nothing but fishing. Between the 3 of us we caught CATFISH AFTER FRIGGIN CATFISH! we would see GT's out in the water and they wouldn't even look twice. The first day we went out, us 3 burnt to a crisp, sweating bullets, fishing all day not a single decent fish, not even 50 meters up the road locals would come out and smash a dozen in 2 hours then bugger off!
All in good fun :P
We live in a society where pizza gets to your house before the police.
tried to get out on the bay this week, epic faliure to choppy i spent 1.5 hours at mornington peir, the only 2 fish i caught i caught in the first 20 minutes, 1 22 cm pinky and 1 21cm flatty.
Saving to go up north to chase barra, gts, queenys and the like.
Dream: one day to own/run a charter boat and take people fishing. (currently studying to become one)
Peace out Jonesy![]()
Your studying to become a charter boat?
would be the life though
the only fishing story i have is spending 12 hours fishing, kept getting big hits on the end of the line but nothing made it back. so for 12 hours caught absolutely nothing yet everyone around me filled their buckets
Sweet, off to Bermagui this weekend. Hopefully the weather is good and I get a few days out fishing.
Gotta Love Darwin...85cm Barra
Fishing runs in my family, My dad and grandfather used to always take me out as a kid and as soon as I got my license I started going out much more with mates. Last few years Ive been right into soft plastic/hard body fishing mostly for flat head and bream. More then anything I love fishing for bass but dont get the opportunity as much. For most of the year Im fishing in Pittwater, Narrabean lakes and even Patonga occasionally. Every year I go to Forster after new years for a week which is an awesome fishing destination.
