Alright ive come to that stage in my life that I'm no longer cool to be driving a commodore, let alone anything with a cat playing with a ball in the decal. Im after a light commerial due to work and fun commitments, dont see the points in a cruiser or patrol due to my long distance driving.
The newer style hilux seems to have pretty piss poor ground clearance compared to the navara, also the navara is cheaper. I was wondering if anyone out there has had both experience in either vehicles and which one comes out on top for both reliablity and quality.
Navara d22 and d40 3L turbo diesel
Hilux 2004 - 2010 3L turbo diesel
2010 hilux in any colour but WHITE with roll bars, bull bar, driving lights, mud tyres and side steps = sex on wheels
nissan parts are drug money... i say toyota....
dont sweat the petty... pet the sweaty...
Found a 2010 d22 navara with 4,000km on the clock for 29 grand but its black so bugger that
The new navaras are pretty ordinary. A bloke i do work for had one for a couple of years and gave it the flick because it was falling apart. Also i hear they're pretty thirsty as well. I don't have any complaints about the hilux, although they're well overpriced for what they are. For the $$$ you're looking to spend i'd consider a dmax, had one for 3 days when i was still deciding what to buy and was very impressed with it. Isuzu motors are excellent as well and it went like the clappers.
2010 Holden Colorado LT-R D/Cab, Turbo Diesel, Manual, thats what I would get but everyone has their own opinions. I agree the new Toyota Hilux does look nice.
new hilux looks nice, but low ground clearance the exhaust is the lowest part.
the navaras can be quite thirsty and the underbody gets covered in surface rust real quick (had a few traded where i used to work)
triton is bloody expensive to service, needs valve adjustments every 30,000 kms and turning circle of an aircraft carrier
The holden colorado, friend has 2 diesels that he uses for farm work/ towing race car & general family trucks. gets good economy with them both and both have been reliable has had them for about 3 years now and one is getting close to 180,000 and still as good as the lower km one!
havent had any experiance with the d-max
Hi lux FTW. A Navara drives like a truck compare to the hi lux. And Toyota holds its re sale a lot better than Nissan.
Apparently the navaras have weak gearboxes.
I'd take the hilux or the amarok.
Longer service intervals on the vw would be nice too
Or you could go Great Wall. Rofl.
Have you looked at Mazda BT50 they go like the clappers, also the ford /mazda Ranger we have two of these at work and there great only like the Hilux poorly finished inside.
do not. i repeat.. DO NOT!! buy anything that has been on a minesite! no matter how cheap, u do not want something thats been driven on bumpy roads covered in water that will make it rust away before your eyes by people with zero mechanical sympathy that u wouldn't lend your skateboard to
Shit yeah, the only reason why you would rebuild an ex mine vehicle is to flog it off to some other unsuspecting victim. But thats just low.
Our Nissan Patrols used to last 12 months before their chassis snapped on the hoist, Landcruisers lasted only a few months more.
We run 4 Hilux's at work, 2 are 2wd petrol and the other 2 are 4x4 diesel.
All 4 are 2010/2011 models.
Build quality is shocking, paint is almost see through, interior trim keeps falling off, factory trays on the 2 petrol units are a joke, replaced them with steel.
The 2 V6 petrols are shocking on fuel, plenty of power though.
Diesels have been back to the workshops plenty of times with leaking injectors/seal issues, they leak diesel eveywhere, nothing worse then a pissed off customer with diesel/oil stains on thier clean concrete.
They hate rain all 4 are parked outside during the day when not in use, had electrical problems, computers/lights/dashes etc.
Driveline's are loose, 2nd gear synchros are weak.
I drive all 4 of them regulary and I hate the damm things.
The boss is looking into replacing them with new model BT-50's or basic unit Amaroks if they are released here.
i like the the new ford wildtraks, the new bt50 looks like shit
The Mad Dutchman
Only problem with the BT50/Ranger is they're prone to falling over.
holden models dont hold their values, looking to upgrade in a few years and i dont want sumthing thats worth bugger all. driven a few ranger/bt50 must say there is just something not right, seem weak and noisey. Dont get me started on greatwalls, if they are even close to the build quality of the tata telcolines i dont even want to be seen dead in the buggers. Ive heard though my sisters b/f at western power not to go for the d40 due to reliablity concerns. It seems what ever i get will be crap, its just which one is less crap. The lesser of two weevels.
I have heard a lot lately that a lot of BT50's have been breaking cam belts at around 100k. Very expensive the fix. I know a few people
that have had Navaras and they have a tiny little clutch even though they are rated to tow 3 tonne. The clutch and dual mass flywheel have needed replacing at as little as 40000km at about $3500 for parts.
There is good and bad in all of them. I have a mate with a td hilux and he loves it. Very ecomomical too. He gets over 750km from 60 litres driving around Sydney.
It depends on what you want to do. I've driven the hilux and liked it but they are expensive, the triton, it was OK but a bit thirsty, has good equipment level. All
of them have tiny little shocks about the diamter of your finger, so if you want go off road you need to replace these straight away.
spoke to guys at work about this recently.
apparently the 3.0L in the Nissans arent that good.
they said something about things going wrong...
however each car is different.
they said if you do go that way to get a 4.2L engine. ic ant remember exactly why. but they have all had those types of cars. and said that motor was the best.
ive driven a few work Hiluxs (pretty much brand new) and it was nice.
one is the low one which i thought, meh. felt like my VS ute but different shaping.
but the dual cab, turbo diesel one was awesome.
picked up low revs high gear. (eg 5th at 60)
also it has been raised, so it was much higher than when it comes out of the factory =P
Just before I picked up my new beast...I like it better than the HiLux

Just a side note, dads got a 04 hilux, probably a bit under powered yet still a very capable vehicle...the newer donks will be alot better, and we went 4wding not long ago, his hilux and a navara were on the trip, both did everything and didn't get stuck.
Yo.
