Potentially with advertising and maybe a subscription fee a service could provide online tv, movies and music legally.

If it were affordable and easy people wouldn't bother with the illegal stuff and the advertising would make an absolute fortune!
iTunes songs are US$0.69 - US$1.29 each. There are other channels similarly priced too. How cheap and easy do you want it?

I had another which had a list of 100 hints for Vista users.
A single page with a bunch of links, that required zero maintenance and made me $150 weekly from Adsense. I sold the site, with its whole one page and the domain name, for 2 grand to a friend, who is still pulling income from it.

She has no internet knowledge at all, does nothing at all to the site, just gets a monthly cheque from Google. As time goes by, the cheques are getting smaller, the site is starting to show its age and needs updating.

Payment rates can vary even on small sites like mine from as little as 1 cent per click to as much as 10 bucks or more, depending on the advertiser. The ads are chosen and cycled by Google, all you do is include the required script wherever you want an ad, you can even choose the size and style of the ads. Google places ads on websites according to the likely interests of the visitors too, so the ads are quite productive. You get paid every time someone clicks on a link, regardless of what they do when they get there.

With large sites like megaupload, with traffic of hundreds of thousands or even millions of hits a day, the advertising income is enormous. Google is not just a search engine, its actually the largest and most profitable advertising agency/media organisation the world has ever seen.
Wow. never realized it was so lucrative. Now if only I were creative enough to come up with such a site

Even if say a song is say $1 and say you want to download an album with between 10-20 songs, that works out at $10-$20. and for not much more you can buy the cd. Hence why people are still going to illegally download it. Most people have hundreds of songs on their computer, if not thousands, one song at between $0.69-$1.29 isn't going to break the bank but download a couple of hundred and it adds up pretty quick.

Musics cheap enough. (dispute that we pay $1.79-$2.39nzd per song with a us exchange rate of 0.8!)

Movies and tv shows are hardly even avaliable legally

"This year, Dotcom was planning the launch of Megabox, which would allow artists to earn money from advertising and membership if they allowed tracks to be downloaded free. And he had pulling power. His Megaupload promotional video last month featured Will.i.am, P Diddy, Kanye West, Chris Brown, Jamie Foxx, Kim Kardashian and Lil Jon."

Now that is a great idea, everybody wins (aside from the record companies, so it would probably be shut down eventually anyway).

Free music + the artist gets a cut.

Thats actually something people here could appreciate about JC too. OK there are advertisers, but its on a small scale with the current system and not plastered all over every page. The site owner could sitck a bunch of google adsense code in here and make quite a few bucks, the traffic is high enough to do reasonably well.. but he doesnt. I appreciate that.

I think you summed it up nicely there, to me anyway, the only people really pushing these changes are the record companies.

From what i have heard and read, the artists get bugger all from sales of their records anyway, so most of it goes to the record companies.

Personally i buy all my music on CD. I will listen to it on youtube before buying to make sure i will enjoy the whole album. What annoys me though, is sites like Amazon don't allow mp3 purchases in NZ.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out though.

Just for those who for some reason find it hard to read rules:

    JC Rules

Discussion of illegal activities such as software and music piracy and other intellectual property violations are also not allowed.

Be careful what you post or link to.

If you need to ask for "good" torrent sites, you shouldn't be illegally downloading. Just use the usual places. If you don't understand that, either, then gtfo.

Hell yeah! I know the guy that owns orsm.net (NSFW) ... He pulls in about half a million $$$ a year just from advertising & link clicks and updates the site once a week with a new blog entry and new "multimedia" content that's largely emailed to him by his "fans" in the USA.

I can parent directory google and get most of the files i want
    or through netbios
anyway, just because megaupload is down, there's a lot of other sites, like rapidshare, fileserv, etc.. etc..

fyi: nothing in my post is illegal, so no one should be whining
also, it would be very hard to stop piracy, even if they(isp) black listed all of the sites, all someone has to do is use a private proxy, win

You can still go on the site (Unless it's been censored with an fbi warning like MegaUploads), but if you continued to download torrents etc, that's where it becomes illegal.

Exactly, they will never stop it, it'd be more hassle than it's worth to try and stop it, and the majority of people will probably do everything they can to make it hard for authorities, to the point where the government just gives up
