came across this the other day whilst launching our boat. unhooked all the chain, and winch and backed down hahah
Currently racing on the odd sportsboat(Shaw 650, Thompson 750) when work permits. 9-10 years ago I was working as a sail-maker (Quantum Sails here in Perth, now Evolution Sails), ran campaigns in Etchells, S80's and Offshore, as they were the main clients I worked with. I was always a bit big back then for any sort of dinghy, but have lost a lot of weight now and with a possible change of job coming up, might think of getting a foiling moth, those things are crazy.

God damn, the chain is the absolute LAST thing you unhook and you only do it when the boat is ready to be pushed/driven off into the water. Some people just have no idea.
Actually, I just remembered what my uncle did a few years back. He always used to travel between his house and the local lake (about 100Km) with JUST the chain and retrieval strap hooked on. Nothing else, no strap over the guts and no transom to trailer straps. One day it but him in the arse when he hit a big bump in the road. Haha.
Every so often i go to visit my father, an experienced fisherman. We sit around the local boat ramp for a bit of a laugh.
By far the most ridiculous thing i have ever seen, a 30ft yacht that had only been tied off at the stern, the tide was going out. Unattended ... We left before it broke in two.
Also all the rich people that visit the mornington peninsula in the new years holidays in their flash 4WD and 25footers leaving the handbrake off, turning their 4WD into a submersible.
dumbest i have seen is people trying to put boat onto trailer and the bottoms of the rails boat sits on are about 10cm out of the water!
took them a good 30+ minutes to get in on. 6 people standing around wondering why it was so hard...
we just sat back and laughed =P
only to see 2 mins later once on, 2 people who own a boating (ski type rides) business take 30 secs max ot get it on.
back trailer in, drive on, drive car out. was bloody fast.
also seen people use a boat ramp that is very short (more for tinnies, or maybe a jetski) for a massive skiboat.
backs trailer in, rear axle must be hanging over the end of ramp (you could tell, it jumepd up once it hit the rail at bottom)
tbh it was still out a little high but enough to get a boat on.
lady who i doubt has ever drive boat before floors it!!!
nearly watch as boat goes through trailer into the back of a brand new 4wd.
we are like what the.... *shakes head in dismay*
worst thing i have done though.
out on property that backs onto a massive lake, so its just a mud/nature bank to lauch boat/skis (so no ramp)
go to take it out.
car (paddock bomb) gets bogged. in the mud in water
grab tractor, hook up chain, pull it out.
not that bad, but then i also realised i had the handbrake on when trying to drive it out *facepalm*
but on holidays if you go to the boatramps the stuff you see is so bloody funny
and im sure i could go on with stuff ive seen but id better not =P
Hey all.
Reason why i asked bout the traction is on the Hawksbury in Sydneys Central Coast, went fishing one day and the amount of wheel spins i heard from the boat ramp was amazing.
Saw a hilux (mustve been a 4x2 or didnt know how to engage 4x4) stuck on the ramp unable to get his boat out, saw also a camry, commodore also spinning there wheels like crazy.
Admit, funny to watch. Would be embaressing though

Lead foot is the problem there. People get it in their heads that --> Heavy Boat = Need more power. More power = bury foot in floor. We always used my VT to launch the boat, she's a 15 footer so not that small, V6 Auto - never had any trouble moving up and down the ramp. Dad's VE is the same, no problems.
