ok so i have a few options to help you (i currently am an apprentice sparky)
but dont say only certain area of Melbourne or whatever.
if you get a good company youll get paid to travel, and when i say travel it can be anywhere!
i know ive been sent bloody far, but hey it is worth it.

firstly have you sat the NECA apprentice apptitude test?
i know it probably isnt until octoberish but i would still sit it.
its how i got the job.
go well and big companies actually go after you!

2ndly send out resumes to all big companies now. to get feelers out.
you may have trouble because of no NECA test but its still work a go.
companies such as Downer, Nilsen, O'Donnell Griffin are the big 3. get witht hem and you are set! =P
other companies that do commercial are: Maxim, Stowe, PSG Elecraft, KLM
you could also try some other electrical based things such as lifts (KONE).
there are many other big companies you just have to look
also doing dual trade (air con) could also be another option

    3rdly
if all else fails you can always go to a training group.
370 degrees (victec) do training schemes, and you can go to many various places. industrial, commercial, domestic (yuk! =P)
i dont know of others that do this but have a look into it.

    4thly.
chuck up resumes at electrical places.
AWM, Middies, Leckys (just to name a few)
    can always help

    good luck with it all
how about we make the pedals out of sticky rubber and the shoes with steel spikes. at least my shins would like that

Dont work for them as a labourer, they will have you doing electrical work paid as a labourer, and thats where you will stay.

Do as Drawnnite said, even ask about work experience with companies you want to work for. to show your aptitude, and being keen.

This is a bad time to be looking for a job in the trade section (it's always quiet at this time of year). Give it a few months.

yeah it is bloody quoet right now (although the job im on is still going from last year so it seems busy to me)

yeah most companies will look at that NECA test.
so even if it means redoing it. but send out resume's to companies now and just let them know you will be sitting it this year.
atleast it shows your keen =P

instead of going for a labouring job, i would suggest 370 degrees (victec)
atleast then youll get full training for 4 years, in the electrical trade.
only downside is you could be sent to many different companies who all do things differently, but hey after 4 years and an A grade licence, the worlds your oyster.

    also regarding these other people.
its not what you know but who you know =P
