i think anyone who chooses the life of public service, law enforcement military or any other should have to right to have tatts visible. they go out and put themselves in harms way, and then some pencil pusher dictates what they can and cant have on their own body. insult to injury....
pretty soon your gonna need a permit to fart in this country....
dont sweat the petty... pet the sweaty...
No.
There is nothing wrong with a little tatt showing, even in ceremonial uniform. As long as that uniform is pristeen and looking 100% and the person in it is clean cut and up to standards who cares? I have a little overhang on the back of my neck and on my wrist but when i'm on parade or in ceremonial i look perfect. Everything to do with the uniform and my dress standards is down to a "tee", you could cut yourself on the creases they are ironed that well. So if you saw me like that and saw a little ink showing you would have cry about it?
Also what is wrong with sky blue? it's almost identical to what i wear. You think a darker colour is more respectable?
Roses are red Violets are blue, I'm schizophrenic, And so am I.

I'm on the fence a littlle, it really depends on definitions.
I have no problems with a couple small tasteful tattoos being visible. I think any kind of job that requires one to deal with the public requires a certain standard of appearance though, whether you're a cop, a checkout chick or a spare parts salesman, it doesn't matter.
If a checkout chick was wearing a prominent nose ring I would ask her to remove it whilst serving customers. A small stud I would have no problem with. I wouldnt employ a kid with a mohawk to deliver pizzas either (if I sold pizzas). Its part of dealing with the public. I can respect their right to be individuals, they can respect my right to not employ them.
Any kind of facial tattoo I would find unacceptable completely for an employee in a public contact job. In NZ, maybe, for cultural reasons, but not here.
A single tatt or two I would consider acceptable, but a cop wearing short sleeves and full arm tattoos, especially if they are themed with skulls and demons, swastikas or swear words etc. , is not a good public image.
Keeping that public image is a part of the job, like it or not.
There is tough, and then there is cocky. Cocky ####s get their heads kicked in, and nobody messes with the tough-looking one just incase.
Agree with the professional appearance of people working in a professional field. My mate is a tattoo artist. He is COVERED in tatts, full sleeves, full body, legs, up his neck, side of his face, even shaved his head so he could cover his entire skull with a tiger tatt. Got the biggest possible ear spacers and piercings. Now i'm sure he could walk into any tattoo shop and get a job, because how you appear in that particular profession isn't a major cause at all, judging by all the other people you see working in the places.
I know you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, even if he WAS a skilled lawyer, financial planner, banker whatever, and you walked into a place and saw this person wanting to serve you, it doesn't cut through as a professional appearance and doesn't reflect well on the company
Let freedom ring with a shotgun blast
this sums it up nicely...

The only thing I do agree with here is that some people with tattoos are stupid. I was in a tattoo shop in Newcastle when two young girls came in and asked for tattoos. They didnt have one picked out...they giggled and said to the guy there..."Oh you can choose" He looked at them in disgust and sent them away. Now you say that people with tattoos have low self esteem and low class... I happen to think those that judge other as low class. To look at me no one would ever know I have tattoos. I got them for myself and they all have different special meanings for me. Now its your opinion and your allowed to dislike tattoos...but assuming everyone that has them ...are stupidwell maybe you should do a bit of research into why people get tattoos. For some its a cultural thing. I think you will find that the majority of people with tattoos...put a lot of thought into the design.
On the original topic of police officers having them....it depends where and what. I happen to think men in uniform and tatts...yummm![]()

Some tattoo art is awesome. I love looking at books of tattoo art.
The Mona Lisa is awesome too, if thats the sort of art you are into. If I liked the Mona Lisa though, and had it tattooed on my forearm, I think I would get pretty damn sick of her enigmatic smile after a few years.
I can appreciate art in all its forms. I would never personally have any on my body though.
If you choose to be 'an individual' in any way, be it tattooing, piercing, wearing a mohawk or painting a target on your arse, thats totally your own choice.. but when you do it, you are aware that doors will close for you. You must be. Its a fact of life, its been happening for all eternity worldwide to anyone who dared to be different.
I agree that with currently serving police officers, they certainly shouldnt be required to remove tattoos, or be sacked. They were employed under a set of rules which presumably have been adhered to, and tattoos arent like uniforms, they cant be just changed at will.
That doesnt mean the rules cant be changed to prevent any more being employed, or serving officers prevented from getting more tattoos. Its a job which involves public contact, they are supposed to be role models, and extensive tattoo work is not acceptable to Joe Average. Just like any other job, there are standards to adhere to, and if you prefer to be 'an individual' instead of getting a job with the police force then thats your choice.
