Fresh ink rules out a career in police | thetelegraph.com.au
NSW police officers will be banned from having visible tattoos under a sweeping reform of the force's public image set to begin this year.
The Sunday Telegraph can reveal that a draft policy, being prepared for Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione, is in the final stages of approval and recommends banning all visible tattoos on serving police and new recruits coming into the force.
The document, written by Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy and Assistant Commissioner Paul Carey, recommends a new standard for cadets, meaning that anyone with prominent body art trying to join the police could be denied entry to the academy.
Discussions are also under way about how serving officers with full-sleeve tattoos, or other prominent tattoos, should be managed, with several options being considered.
They range from asking officers to wear long-sleeved shirts and pants to cover up the tattoos, to the more extreme measure of having them removed entirely.
Sounds good, police force should look respectable. Same as the fence forces, all part of the discipline. Since they lowered these requirements it has gone to crap. Bring back the good image and perhaps it will weed out the deadshits![]()

What a joke. I think it's good to have big burly cops with tattoos. Not these days when you have 5ft women trying to order people round.
Sorry Minux this is one the very few times I disagree with you. I think it's just one more step in pushing nanny state political rule onto the already understaffed and underpowered police force. The police are already struggle to adequately "police" anything other than the roads. Why push out the cops we do have just because they have some ink on their arms? Let the boys do their jobs.
Whats next? take away their guns because they look dangerous?
I for one would be doing as this fella says.

^yes. I don't they they should be discriminated against because of the colors of there skin.
I think a copper with tatts looks tough..
I definately pay more attention to them![]()
I'm a girl... I'm blonde... But I drive a really nice car
Good, they look revolting.
For the life of me I can't understand why a male or female would want to disfigure their body in any way shape or form. Imagine what this trash will look like in 10, 20, 30 years or more.....Hideous in the extreme.
Tattoo's are really on people that have very low self esteem and are low class individuals, and hope this monstrosity on them will have normal people think oh wow......look at this.....well, trust me, it does not. You look like what you are....STUPID.
So I am a low class individual because I have tattoos? Hahaha I am far from it. Name calling is quite childish.
This thread is going places.
I have a full sleeve on my left arm, half sleeve on my right, and half my back tattood.
I do not suffer from any form of low self esteem, and without discerning how you catergorise a citizen as "low class" I can inform you I have succesfull career in hotel management, with the countries most successful and largest hotel branding. I earn a respectable living and provide well for my family. I have a beautiful wife, and amazing 4 year old son.
Welcome to the 21st century.
Crawl back into your cave. The 1960s are calling.
One of my lecturers at Uni used to be in the AFP. He saw my tats and would always tell me stories of how he was treated in the force because of them 30 odd years ago. Its odd seeing the force seemingly go back a step.
I agree that neck tattoos and face tattoos should be out. But the common arm or leg tat is going a bit to far.
I think its probably a good idea and I don't have a problem with it the purpose of a uniform by definition is to make everyone look uniform, the same. When you let people look different they stand out from the rest of the team which is not what you really want in the police force. They should also piss off the stupid police turbans, they are a joke.
Police officers are people too. They aren't all identical robots^
Don't really have any objections to them having tough guy stamps, but if theyre overly visible and stuff, maybe the line should be drawn. If you got snakes or some other crap wrapping up around your neck, thats not really acceptable for someone who is supposed to be upholding the law and the like in my opinion
Let freedom ring with a shotgun blast
Got to disagree there.
Most of the boys in my squadron have them, i have them too. The one on the back of my neck pokes out only the tiniest bit over my collar sometimes.
Even the old schoolers have tatts in here, you should know that. It does not mean we have a lack of discipline at all.
I can't say much for the lowered standards/ requirements, it's more retards that won't follow the rules, not the rules themselves.
Roses are red Violets are blue, I'm schizophrenic, And so am I.
Next male cops will have to sit down to piss,, bloody joke I say
Instead of getting rid of tats, maybe they should start looking at the fitness of some of the police officer's, the defence force has 2 fitness test in a year and police have nil just for comparo !!
Face tattoo's i dont have a problem with being banned but all the others dont have too much of an issue with them although depending on the theme of the tat i can understand why they may want to get rid of them all together as the press would have a field day if one officer got asked to cover up his tattoo but his mate didnt
Seen cops with the names of their children and partner/wife inked on them and recon that’s cool... so see no issue with tats when they are in a discreet place and not easily visible.
Seen cops with Tribal/Gang/Arabic-Asian-some other Language inked on a clearly Anglo looking copper all down his arm... fails in my books.
In the end it's a personal choice and I might add this....
The Police force is not a normal job... it can be considered by many as a Parra-military in nature and so subject to its owns rules/laws, not what we(The general public)... think or feel about it. So our opinions here on this forum and many other blogs/forums on the internet count for nothing.
as many others have said.
if i was to see a 6ft 6 built like a tankpoliceman with some tattoos, i dont think you would do anything wrong.
not that you should be doing wrong anyway =P
yes some tattoo areas should be cut out (to an extent)
but if coverable then whats wrong?
is it really getting in their line of work? if it really causing any more problems in society?
for the record, i dislike tattoos.
i do not see the point behind them, and i will never get one.
but if you want/have one then thats your choice, and i find nothing wrong with that.
and im sure there are many other more important thing to worry about then tattoos.
hell look at one of our forum members who recently got bashed.
i would rather then find those morons who did so then worry bout some bit of ink.
Please, don't hold back. Tell us how you really feel.
Not a fan of tatts personally or facial piercings however I fail to see how having them stops a person from being dedicated to their job and a good worker. I would not like to see a cop though with facial tattoos.
I fail to see how having tatts makes a cop more threatening or that people are more compelled to obey them. I wasn't aware having tatts make you tough and invincible.

Their performance should be the determining factor not their look, In saying that though most major corporations have a "preferred image" they seek to employee.

Is this it?
