    Default Random thread about cars

Mods, you gotta allow this. It will be popular..

Post anything about cars.. Whatever the hell you want.. Random.. Anything..

    Just cars.. Just is..

left handed drivers are more likely to get into car accidents than right handed drivers.

The whole driving on the wrong side of the road thing in the USA and various other countries started because Napoleon was left handed. We all know aobut jousting and stuff, jousting on the right side of the road (track?) suited left handers better so because of Napoleon it stuck..

And spread to the USA.. That's what I heard anyway..

Any other random car stuff.. Doesn't have to be Holden specific.. ANYTHING..

well, if its trivis time...try this one, dunno how tru it is, but its crazy enough to be right
The distance between American rails are 4 feet 8.5 inches, which corresponds to 1435.1 millimetres. This is a strange distance! Why?

Well, let’s have a look, while we go a bit back in history:

    1) 4 feet 8.5 inches was the distance between British rails, and British engineers built the American railroads.

    2) The same people who built the British streetcar lines also built the first railroads in UK.

    3) They used the tools made for building coaches to build railroad waggons, and coaches had that track gage.

    4) Ok, then! The coaches had that specific track gage because of the width of the British roads.

    5) The Romans built the first British roads. The British just kept the width.

    6) The Romans built the roads to fit their chariots. Smart military guys, the Romans!

    7) The Roman chariot had the width of two horses. Still making sense!

So in reality, the width of the American railroads is the same as the rumps of two Roman horses! That makes you wonder, doesn’t it? Specifications and measurements last forever – so you are probably right the next time you get a specification and wonder, which horses ass it came from!

    it gets worse!

When you look at a space shuttle ready for launch, you see the two booster rockets by the fuel tank. The company Thoikol in the state of Utah makes these boosters.

The engineers who make these boosters would prefer to make them bigger, but they have a problem: The boosters are transported by train from the factory to the launch site. On the way they have to pass through a tunnel, so the boosters have to fit this tunnel! The tunnel is just a bit wider than the railroad line.

Conclusion: The design of one of the most advanced means of transportation in the world is guided by the width of a horse’s ass! Would you believe it?

wellll ...I think we would all be better off without em....think of the money we would save, the environment we would save and the lives we would save...
In saying that we can't live without em! Especially here in OZ, never owned one while living in UK for 12months but the transport system over there was awesome.

The Holden company has been around for longer than the Ford company (I believe.. 1850s? not 100% when)..

When Holden were designing the VN Commodore they had a car load of Holden engineers driving around in a Ford XF and switching every 10km or so, all in the name of research so they could get the VN right (fuel scare of the 80s over, need a big car for the 90s..)

EDIT: And since the thread's not specific to Holden/Commodores I've moved it to the pub, but I won't lock it.. it's a good thread, we'll be able to learn a lot from it.

in the early days of the cars if you were to drive though london you had to have someone walking ahead with a red light so as to warn horse back riders that they were about to pass a car, this allowed a rider to dismount and move his horse to the side of the road to avoid it from either throwing him off or becoming statled and bolting.

In one of the states in america someone had to walk infront of a female driver waving a flag to warn other drivers..

or on the old jalopy style cars [ model T ford era ] before they made window wipers the pasenger had to hand out of the window and rub the windscreen down to keep visability up.

too bad it was mostly husband and wife driving together >: )

The very existance of flamethrowers proves that sometime, somewhere, someone said to themselves, 'You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to do it.

Hmm only one problem with that. The rail roads are like Australia. They use different scales all over the different states.
