    Default IRIS Throttle body

Not sure where this one should go so I put it in the pub out of the way.

I was wondering, has anyone heard of a throttle body that instead of a butterfly valve it uses a iris (think like a SLR camera).

I just thought of it and wondered if anyone has tried it. The advantage as I see it is that at WOT there is NO restriction.

i have seen a manifold to suit the holden injected 5 litre once, it used sliding plates instead of a throttle plate on an intersecting axis. did a search but i cant find anything. i thought orion was the brand name. i'll keep looking

hmmm, I think you might be onto a new idea, but what would be the benefits?
IMO it would be too complex to be a production item, but, pigs do fly...

The only benifits I see would be at WOT there is nothing there. With regards to complexity, I agree. I thought I would put the idea out there to see if it sparks off anything....

Also if someone starts flogging off new restriction free throttle bodies you know who to thank

michael, i am not sure if your iris throttle idea has been done, but i know for certain there were some slide throttle intakes made. so it's not exactly a new idea. and it really wasnt that complex, just evenly spaced trumpets and a throttle plate laying at 90 degrees to the axis of the trumpets on either side. these plates were hooked up to a linkage at the end of the manifold where there were provisions for your tps.

The only problem l can see with an iris design is that when the throttle body is opened half way, there is a wall blocking the airflow around the circumfrance of the throttle body as opposed to the normal butterfly design where the butterfly doesn't pose as much of a blockage. Air flow hates hard corners and edges, this is why bellmouths are used to over come any sharp edges in a manifold design. Also, you might lose some turbulance due to the wall of the iris tb.

Would be great when the foot was planted though!!
