Default Interstate registration transfer

Hi all,

Just bought a car from QLD with personalised plates, I've got new VIC personalised plates that I want to put on it (it's the car I wanted, not the rego!).

I'd want to sell the QLD rego as I know it is worth something, but not sure of the "best" option to take (read: best option which will minimise VicRoads and/or Queensland Transport ripping me off).

Should I:

1. get the VIC rego on it now (as it has current valid QLD rego for a few months) and get a refund on the remaining QLD rego. But I don't want to cancel the QLD rego, as I would like to sell it, but QLD Transport say you can't transfer the rego into your name if you don't live in QLD.

or

2. wait until I sell the QLD rego, then that transfer will be from the person I bought the car from in QLD to the person who wants the rego in QLD with nothing to do with me, but would that make it be more difficult to get the VIC rego if the car doesn't have any current rego (say the day after I sold the QLD rego, technically the car has no rego) and I would need certificates, etc.

Has anyone done this sort of thing before? I am rather confused to say the least ...

Any pointers much appreciated ...

well, you can't sell the rego. not possible. plates? sure, but not the rego. just cancel the rego. to get the car rego'd in your name, pretty sure you will have to get a roady. don't think the qld rego counts for anything at all, because with qld rego, you never have to get a roady if it doesn't become unregistered

But if I cancel the QLD rego, won't someone else be able to register the personal rego as it is not tied to anyone's name?

How can the value be in the plates when there is no rego?

The plates themselves aren't unique, can't duplicate plates just be ordered if you own the rego?

Very confused now

Thanks again,

1) No. Yes it is. Either the guy you bought it from, or yourself. and since qld t'port said you can't register it in your name coz you're down there, it's still in his name
2) because someone has paid for them, they have been pressed, and the RTA has a record of who bought them. if someone else buys these plates from the RTA, then the new owner will undoubtedlyregister the car wwith these plates, therefore letting the RTA know they have them, for plate duplication purposes. if the plate has already been made, then they will only made another 2 sets of duplicates. say they all get stolen so you get new ones, after the 3rd set is made, and it gets stolen, they won't make that plate again.
3)they're personalised plates, so yes they are unique. they wion't make that plate you have for me, no matter what. yes duplicate plates can be ordered if you hold the rego.
You can't sell just the rego. to sell the rego, the car must be included in the sale. If you don't want the rego for the new car you've bought, either sell the car to someone else (obviously not an option) or cancel the rego. there are no other solutions.

Just out of curiosity, what are the plates??? if I like them, I may consider relieving you of them

OK, I think I might now finally understand, I got confused thinking that the registration and the plates are the same thing, but they're seperate things.

You cannot hold registration if you are from interstate, but you *can* have personal plates if you are from interstate.

The information is on VicRoad's website, under the title of "Interstate vehicle registration", all these $$$ that we get ripped off %#$@#&$^%&#)(&*#*$

Looks like have to :
- Get a RWC
- VicRoads appointment and inspection fee $31.90
- Registration fee
- TAC charge
- Vehicle Duty
- Plate fees (but I've already shelled out $$$ for personalised plates)

(I would have include all these links to make it easier, but these goverment department's URL's aren't simple, as they all must use some weird system that takes care of their document management. If you want to check it out, you'll see what I mean!)

VicRoads also says that you can claim a refund on the unused portion of the interstate rego, by handing in the interstate plates to them and get a receipt, which you take to QLD Transport. But as the QLD plates are personalised (there is still a few months to go on the rego), I can't hand them in.

So, that takes care of the rego, but now the plates have to be transferred across to me, so I need to complete a "Personalised Number Plate/s Transfer Application" (Form F2963) available from http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/licensingrego and perhaps also a "New Customer Application" (Form QF3503) as I'm in Victoria.

DSTRBD, I've PMed you what the rego is, I think I;m not allowed to post the plates here, as I think it is regarded as a "For Sale" item and should be in that forum ...
