    Default Question regarding importing parts

Ok im looking to import a few LS1 parts as the prices (once converted to $AUS + postage) are alot cheaper then buying here.
Now what I want to know is, I know there is a tax (government screwing me again) on imported items, but how do you pay the tax? Is it something the seller works out or me? How much tax is it, and is it a set amount or a percentage of the item cost?

    G.S.T. I'm dynamite.
G.S.T. And I'll win the fight.
    G.S.T. I'm the power load.
    G.S.T. Watch me explo-o-o-de....

G.S.T. will be payable on anything you bring into the country. It is assessed by customs and will be charged to you by the freight company.

As with anything you buy in Australia, it is a flat 10% of the price of the goods.

One way around it if you're buying smaller items is to get the seller to mark them as a gift... But I didn't say that...

In "commercial" quantities? If not, there's your answer...

They will charge GST on larger & more expensive items, even if they are one-off.

If you are continuously bringing in commercial quantities and not paying any GST, well, don't worry. I'll visit you. Might even bake a cake with a hacksaw blade in it!

I was under the impression that if you were under a certain price you didn't have to pay anything. 150us or 150 aud I think it is per delivery, but I've been told to stagger your deliveries if your doing multiple cheaper items.

    Actually, thats stamp duty?

Im still very confused how this works. How do they know the price of the item/s? Can I just say I paid $150 for it when I paid say $500??
Ahhhhh!! Is there a website that covers this?
Like if I buy off an ebay member from the USA and he has a postage cost of say $30AUD and the item is $400AUD how is GTS and import tax added?? Who do I pay it to??

    Shhh... The taxman lurketh...

If it isn't marked as a gift, customs will hold onto it until you pay the GST. They will contact you with details about how to pay.

GST is paid on the total cost. So $30 shipping + $400 item = $43 GST.

Generally speakinG, Its only Fair To pay the tax.

Just outta interest AirStrike, what LS1 bits are you wanting to buy?

Was thinking of having a crack at the BOTS (Bolt On True Street) top 10 list, so to do so need the best of the best bolt ons. Was looking at the F.A.S.T LSX inlet manifold and 90mm throttle body and there billit fuel rails at a start. To give you an idea if I convert the price of the inlet manifold, add postage and add GST its still between $350 and $400 cheaper then buying in Australia.
So there isnt an import tax, all I have to pay is GST??

Well, there's import duty, but you shouldn't have to pay it. It applies more to the people who import commercial quantities.

I know a lot of companies dealing on ebay get around this by declaring the item as being returned under warranty.
